Written Directions

The Mowhawk Trail is in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. It is also called route 2. The best part of this ride is the 35 miles between North Adams and Greenfield, MA. You can do it in either direction east or west and it is just as good.

Scenery

Great scenery. You start out in North Adams and proceed east to climb a small mountain. At the top there is a Native American gift shop where you can pull off. There is an incredible view of where you started in North Adams from here. The road proceeds through forest for several miles and then follows along the banks of a river for another 10-15 miles.

Drive Enjoyment

Lots of turns and hills. Roads are well kept but there are very few places to pass. If you come up on a truck, you may be better off pulling off and letting them get ahead of you.

Tourism Opportunities

Not too much to offer along this route outside of a restaurant, gas, and an occasional park.

Ride it in the Fall for unbelievable colors! This route is best on a weekday without all the heavy tourist traffic. The hairpin and the curves are great!

Beautiful road with high speed sweepers and some tighter turns heading thru a charming part of the state. Lots of options to stop including Shelburne Falls and the Bridge of Flowers. It can have some traffic, but with plenty of places to pass, generally not a bad run. My favorite is in early September... summer traffic is gone, leaves are starting to turn and the air is crisp, but not yet cold.
