Written Directions

This route is very easy to find and follow. Just start out in Socorro, NM and take US 60 west all the way to then end point of Springerville, AZ. Along the way you'll go through Magdalena, NM and Datil, NM and Pie Town, NM and Quemado, NM and then Springerville, AZ. If desired you can continue on to Show Low AZ which is still on US 60.

Scenery

A nice ride through remote a maintain landscape with ranches, meadows, with more elk than people! Temperatures range from 32 degrees to 70 degrees and the area enjoys 350 sunny days a year. You'll travel through parts of the Cibola national forest as well.

Drive Enjoyment

The road is in good shape. It is a mountain road so expect some twists and turns but for the most part you can cruise at 60 mph. Get gas when you can as there are only a couple of towns with gas.

Tourism Opportunities

You can stop and see the Very Large Array and also stop and have lunch in Datil and then a piece of pie in Pie Town ... which of course is famous for their pies.

Very nice ride, almost a 4-star. Lots of very nice scenery mixed with some pretty vistas of the high desert meadows. Several small towns to stop and take a break. Road is generally in very good shape with a few stretches of patched road, but not bad at all.

A nice ride at higher elevations. I'd stop in Pie Town for a slice of pie (what else would you stop for?) and also at VLA (Very Large Array). It's cool to view the exhibits and take a tour if you have the time.

I gave it a 3, only because it can't compare with nearby outstanding rides like the Coronado. But still a very nice route, especially as a way to avoid I 40. This road used to be in fantastic condition, but lately its gotten humpy, which makes zinging it at 100 mph a bit risky. In its day though, it was flat, empty, and generally free of state cops. Speed limit slow, but mostly ignored by the traffic. Still a very nice fun cut if you are headed towards Flagstaff or Vegas. Good overnight spot in Show Low, where some newer hotels exist. Once in Arizona, don't exceed the speed limit by 1 mph.
