Written Directions

Easy to find and follow. Just start in Williamsport, PA. Just south of town you'll find PA Route 44. Get on this and take it northwest up to Coudersport, PA.

Scenery

70 plus miles of secluded state forest - a nature lovers dream!

Drive Enjoyment

The condition of the tarmac varies greatly. Some spots need work so that's why I've given this road a 4 instead of 5. However, throughout the 120 miles you will encounter many tight turns, elevation changes and a few sweepers.

What you wont have to deal with is stop signs, traffic lights ... there are NONE!!! or traffic - this is one of THE BEST!!!

Tourism Opportunities

The secluded nature of this road has its down side - you better gas-up before entering and you should pack a lunch if want to eat something along the way.

Sep 08 Update from Brad Morgan - I would recommend that anyone taking PA44 should also do a quick side trip to the Hyner View Lookout - its a launch point for hang gliders and a place that offers a spectacular view! Take PA1014 "Hyner Road" for approx 4 miles to the Hyner View State Park entrance - turn left and go approx 3 miles to the lookout. Hyner road and the road to the lookout are an experience in and of themselves - well worth the trip - you wont be disappointed ! Bring your camera (see pictures below).

My wife and I took this beautiful ride and it was great. We stayed the night in Coudersport and came back on 872 then over to 555 to Benezette. We love to see all the elk on Winslow Hill. Just go slow for elk crossing! You will not be dissappointed.

I took this road last Summer (2008) on my Maxi-Scoot and I thought it was the most beautiful ride I have ever taken. I picked up Rt 44 at Allenwood, PA. I crossed over to Austin on Rt 872, which I picked up just before Coudersport. And came back to Rt 80 by way of Rts 120 and 220s. Awesome scenery and just about total isolation on 872. Was glad to get gas at Austin, since I was running on fumes when I arrived there. Perhaps next time I will see some PA elk.

I rode on this road the fall based on the write-up and was NOT disappointed - what great find! Thanks for the accurate description - it did not dissappoint at all. The only thing I would add for others is to be carefull of the lose gravel in some of the tighter corners....and make sure you get gas BEFORE you get on PA 44 !
