Scenery

The perfect route for weekend bikers coming down to visit Brown County from Indy. The ride starts in Morgantown IN and completes a loop which brings you right back to where you started. This route will take you through rolling countryside with plenty of twisting roads and tranquil wooded areas in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Awesome scenery especially in the fall.

Drive Enjoyment

The roads are in excellent condition with the exception of some patches that run through the Morgan-Monroe Forest where there is some loose gravel.

Tourism Opportunities

A nice little hometown gas/convenience store in New Unionville is a good resting spot if you need to gas up or grab a drink.

As others have stated, this is a great area to ride in South Central Indiana. I will admit I was only able to ride the northern and western legs of the published route. There is a bridge out for construction on RT 45 at the eastern end of Lake Lemon. Had I followed my first instinct, to back track just a little, I would have easily been back on track (there were no detour signs posted for assistance and while I did have my phone, I hate relying on GPS). So I took a relatively adventurous chance and headed back west along the south side of Lake Lemon, headed generally north on Shilo Rd then back east on E Anderson Rd then north on N Low Gap Rd then north west on Mahalasvile Rd toward Martinsvile. This detour was spectacular! I'll admit there were parts where the road was little more than a one lane paved path as it wound through the wooded areas, but there were also many more dwellings along this section than I expected. Low Gap Rd takes you past the residence of C R Schiefer stone sculptor. This was an almost foreign worldly experience and definitely unexpected.

The ride was stunningly beautiful. The road between the main forest road and Jordan Road has a lot of potholes. Hard winter.

It seems the forest roads have been damaged by a fire or some other issue in the last few years. There are large swaths of large loose gravel fill. Also if you take a wrong turn, some very treacherous all-gravel roads with turns and hills that can easily cause a spill (avoid East Farr Rd at all costs- being a new rider, I laid my bike down at slow speed here due to super loose gravel - gladly no damage aside bruises and some spilled gas) - take note that Google Maps may direct you down closed private roads that are not accessible to traffic. Other than the damage to the forest roads, this ride has nice scenery. I hope the forest roads are fully repaved soon.
