Written Directions
Start by finding State Rt. 9 in Downtown Salem Ohio. Salem Ohio is about 35 miles south east of Akron Ohio. Take Rt. 9 (or what is called "Newgarden Ave." in Salem) south and stay on Route 9 about 85 miles all the way to the very small town of Armstrong Mills Ohio. From here the route I'm describing is done but you can choose to either turn left (east) on 148 will take you to Powhaton Point on the Ohio river or right on 148 (west) will take you to Barnesville (from there state route 800 will run you north up to I-70 if you are in a hurry to get back to wherever you came from).
Scenery
Scenery runs from low land dairy and beef farms to rough hilly valleys of southeast Ohio typical of the Ohio River valley. Many times wildlife is visible from the road.
Drive Enjoyment
The northern section (north of the town of Cadiz) of this route is comprised mainly of sweepers ... pavement is good, some tar snakes in the area. The southern section is comprised of sweepers that run in to very twisty, down and up hill runs. Watch out for wildlife on the road!
Tourism Opportunities
This route runs mainly thru a rural area. Camping can be done at Bark Camp State Park west of Warnock Ohio. Fuel is easily found. Larger towns with interesting shops are (from north to south) Salem, Carrollton, Cadiz, and St. Clairsville. Hotels and motels can be found in St Clairsville and Salem.
