Written Directions

Buckhannon West Virginia is located in the north central part of the state. Coming from the east you would likely follow the new four-lane highway (US Route 33)from Elkins WV. If you want a REAL treat ride US route 33 all the way from Harrisonburg VA. If you are coming from the north you will likely come down Interstate 79 from Pittsburgh/Morgantown and then follow US Route 33 east from Weston WV appx 15 miles over to Buckhannon.

Scenery

Great consistent pavement...continual twisties the whole 55 miles. Folks it doesn't get much better than this anywhere in the eastern USA. Few rocks or gravel in the turns unless there has been a hard rain in within the previous day or so. Youll hardly ever see the law...but obey the speed limits in the small towns for good measure.

Road Quality: 5

Super nice road quality. Hills, mountains, valleys, twisties, sweepers, cruisers. Something for everyone.

Roadside Amenities:: 2

Who cares about the amenities...what do you want? Its central West-by- God for pete sakes...its the continual twisties that make this route a MUST do if you're passing thru the center of WV. Fuel up/Eat, etc. in Buckhannan then have at it for the next hour. Theres a Subway and a home town restaurant in Webster Springs - Snowshoe is only 40 miles or so beyond over on 219...lots there?

I ride this route alot. It has all the twisties and elevation changes you want. Just be careful on the gravel along most of the road here. It has a nice little State Park called Holly River along the route, and during April 1 til Labor Day weekend you can stop and eat at the nice little restaurant thats there. Beautiful scenary and alot of wildlife so be safe when riding around dark here.

Update from West Virginia’s Road Ranger (July 31st, 2020): Route 20 is pretty rough. It seem like certain counties (municipalities?) take better care of it that others, but coming North out of Webster Springs can be pretty iffy, on a bike. I give it a poor grade until Diana, and then I can’t comment. Perhaps www.wv511.org will notify you if there’s any construction.

Certainly a fun road if you got the time to do it all. The South End is the best end, but the North End besides being slightly busier is still pretty good it's self.

I am grateful to the guys who posted this route. I extended the route from exit 115 [corrected from original post] from I-19, where you can catch wv-20 and headed south. Now, I''m from FL - no hills, no twisties. Man, it was great! Yes the road's rough in places - they've clearly done a lot of patching since Golden Carper's review, but the turns go on and on, and on! There are a couple of hair raising hairpin turns, too. Mostly the turns were well marked; do what you want with their recommended speeds... Not many places to stop for food, fule or bathrooms, so gas and go before you go, as my mom used to say! Did this route on my 400c scooter, loaded for a trip. I had a blast! m
