Written Directions

Hawley, PA.Rt 6 to kimbles Rd./Decker hollow. Right on towpath St. continue straight onto 590.Cross over the Lackawaxen river then next left on to Scenic Dr.Left onto 590 then left onto Lackawaxen Rd.to Rt434 Shohola,PA.

Scenery

This route takes you through a dark heavily forested hollow over a one lane bridge spanning the cliffs above the Lackawaxen to a meandering country road that follows the Peaceful river and then finally along the scenic Delaware river.

Drive Enjoyment

The pavement is fairly new and smooth through the hollow. The route along the river is mainly level and has many sweeping curves although there are pot holes to dodge. The last leg on Lackawaxen Rd. is hilly curvey and filled with craters to navigate through.

Tourism Opportunities

Near the start there are good places to eat such as Erhardts and the Boathouse on Wallenpaupack lake Rt 507. At the end you have attractions such as the Roebling aqueduct, the Zane Grey museum, the Minisink battlefield, the Roebling B&B and the Lackawaxen Inn for lunch.

Motorcycle Road Additional info

The other leg of 590 back to Hawley is also a fun curvy road!

At the town of Lackawaxen, the Two River Junction General Store, www.tworiverjunction.net/, has good, inexpensive food with enclosed porch tables over-looking the Lackawaxen River. Lackawaxen is also the site of the historical Roebling Bridge, www.upperdelawarescenicbyway.org. (Be sure to view the placards in the parking area.)

Concerning the Lackawaxen River between Kimbles and the town of Lackawaxen, a Times-Tribune article a few years ago stated: Home to exceptional trout waters and a corridor where the bald eagle roams in Wayne and Pike counties, the Lackawaxen River has been designated River of the Year for 2010 by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources." In part the Times-Tribune item captures the essence of Towpath Rd., with its natural beauty and occasional scent of live fish swimming in the river, between Kimbles and Rowland. Also, remnants of stone locks and the old Delaware & Hudson Canal seen along the way, inspire images in one's imagination of times past.

Kimbles Road is a short, enchanting paved road through PA's State Game Lands #183. Heading north, before crossing the Lackawaxen River, there is a most unusual sight on the left- a natural bowl with three 98-ft., and one smaller diameter parabolic satellite antennas. After crossing the river, be cautious of the switchback @ stop sign onto Towpath Road.
