Written Directions
This road intersects highway 47 approximately 10 miles north of Vernonia. From here, it takes a gradual climb out of the Nehalem valley following Oak Ranch creek before crossing a low pass. It then roughly follows the Clatskanie river, before climbing again to switch to the Beaver creek valley, running north through Apiary. It then drops down to Old Rainier road (the old route for nearby highway 30), 5 miles west of Rainier.
Scenery
Mostly commercial forest land on the south west end, which gives way to small farms on the north end. Western Oregon's characteristic rolling hills, streams and forest. The old Apiary schoolhouse alongside the road is picturesque.
Drive Enjoyment
A lot of sweeping curves, with occasional sharper bends, and a lot of changes in elevation. Pavement is fairly good at the time of writing. Like most roads through timberland in this area, be wary of log truck traffic and the gravel, dirt and bark from active logging areas.
Tourism Opportunities
Vernonia and Rainier near either end have general amenities (fuel, groceries, restaurants, lodging). Midway along the route, Camp Wilkerson has rustic cabins or camping, though it would be wise to call ahead.
Motorcycle Road Additional info
I regularly turn this into a loop from highway 30 with highway 47 out of Clatskanie first as a more technical section, then taking this route back as a relaxing blast down the more gradual curves.
