Written Directions

Begins by taking route 56 off of Route 4 just south of Urbana, OH, and ends in Athens, OH

Scenery

This route starts in Heartland farms full of golden wheat and green grass, takes a dive into the deep green of Hocking Hills, and ends up with the Appalachian foothill vistas of rural southern Ohio.

Drive Enjoyment

This route begins in soft swelling, wide turning farmland south of Urbana, and turns into a twisty green cavern as it winds its way through Hocking Hills, ending up in Athens and its gorgeous green rolling hills. The pavement is at worst a bit rough, and through the twisty Hocking Hills State park, the pavement is nigh perfect.

Tourism Opportunities

Make sure you gas up! London is the first real stop after Urbana, followed by Circleville, and while there are plenty of little towns along the way, the route is so rural you can go for quite some time without seeing another gas station. Jimbos in Bloomingville and the Smiling Skull Saloon in Athens are both great joints to stop at.

Been on stretch's of 56 here and there over the years, March of "21 rode it from Athens to a little north of I-70. Noticed it was rated 9th in the state, I didn't see that, oh its okay, but not one of the best in Ohio. Without question southern section is the best, can get congested in Hocking Hills area, also in Circleville during Pumpkin Festival. If your north of 70 and west of Columbus, good route to get you to SE Ohio. Last few times thru Circleville, we have stopped at Goodwin's Family Restaurant, food has been great!

I’ve made this trip twice. I live in Marysville, so I cut over to London and get on Route 56 there. Honestly, my favorite part is everything after Circleville. In my opinion, much of the ride prior to that is mostly corn fields and straight lines. But cruising through Hocking Hills is always beautiful!!!

St Rt 56 is a good smooth wide road. The only reason not to give a 5 star is lack of twist and turns. The further south you get the more curves you get. But for just cruising it is worthy of 5 stars.
