Written Directions

From Conway NH, travel 25.5 Miles North up Rt 16 to the Mt.Washington Auto Road on the left.

Scenery

This is a beautiful road. As soon a you start up the mountain, the edge of the road seems a little closer than you would like to have it due to an unforgiving drop off. The views get better and better as you get up in altitude. On a clear day you can see 20 miles in any direction and depending on the weather you can be in or above the clouds. Bring a jacket, the last time I was here it was 80? at the bottom and 29? with 60 mile an hour winds at the top. Awesome for the middle of June.

Drive Enjoyment

The pavement was pretty good but as you get into the alpine zone it got a little worse before it went to gravel. The gravel is more of a hard packed sand and gravel. It is easy to drive on for those of you who dont do gravel. Although the first time I went there, we had to wait for 10-15 minutes while road crews repaired the road. And then we had to drive across 50-100' of fairly deep loose sand and gravel before the steam roller had a chance to pack it down. Probably a rarity.

Tourism Opportunities

There is a lodge with a cafe at the bottom. There is also a museum and gift shop at the bottom. There is a very steep Cog Railway that you can opt to take up to the top for an additional fee. There is restrooms an a giftshop on the top as well.

Motorcycle Road Additional info

I thought it was rather expensive to get up. It was $15 for a motorcycle and rider. $8 for a passenger. $23 total, but I'd do it again because it is an amazing road. For more info go here. https://mtwashingtonautoroad.com

Took this side trip with my daughter as we were running an Iron Butt ride up through the New England States in September 2010. There are no guard rails on most of the road, so I wouldn't suggest relaxing and sightseeing in either direction, up or down the mountain. The hardpack dirt was fine to ride on, until the cages in front of me decided to stop. Restarting on an uphill dirt road with probably a 30-40 ∘ incline is not too fun. Raod narrows a little too much in some spots, requiring vehicles in one direction to turn out so all can get through safely. I'd definitely get back there when I can.

A must do ride...if not faint of heart...little scary at times for a Florida boy but must see vistas and your in low gear the whole time. Go on Ride to the Sky Day during Laconia Bikeweek if possible(Bikes Only No Cages on Mountain)

Made it to the top, Cloud cover at about 5000 foot level. Was eerie riding in the cloud bank. Scenery before entry and after leaving the cloud bank was breathtaking. Definitely a must ride.
