Written Directions

Start in Red Wing, MN and head west on US Highway 61 for about 5.5 miles. Take a left on to highway 19 (now heading south) for about 7 miles. This road offers some good turns but the next road is even better. Now take a right on to County 7 Blvd and stay on this heading north for 8 miles. This will take you to and through Welch, MN and continue all the way up to the route's endpoint when you run back into US Highway 61.

Scenery

You'll be going through a valley that at times feels like being in the mountain valley out west. Overall beautiful scenery and would be even better in the fall with the leaves are changing.

Drive Enjoyment

This is the twistiest road I have ridden in southern Minnesota ... I'm not exaggerating ... way better than the Rushford highway 16. I'm not exaggerating ... this is a fun road! Some corners are very tight and tend to be addictive.

Tourism Opportunities

Nothing to mention as far as roadside amenities. However, gas and food can be found in Red Wing.

The road from 61 to Vasa through Welch (Cty Rd 7) is very good. The twisties are a lot of fun, but Steve's comment about gravel is valid, as the side roads and shoulders are not paved. Pavement on 7 is excellent. 19 from Vasa to Red Wing is nice, although more a relaxed meander down into the river valley with some scenic farms than the ride on 7. I love the poetry painted on the barn that you see on the north side of 19, now the site of a music shop specializing, I believe, in harps. I've noticed that more than one area barn has that and wonder about the roots of that practice. Short, but a sweet ride. Good for an after-work run for area residents.

Great curves and hills, watch for gravel around some curves. You better eat in Hastings or Redwing.

The tar-snake fairy hit this road pretty hard this spring leaving me fairly driven to invent something to do away with that nasty stuff forever. Then I will spend the rest of my time finding the guy who feels its necessary to apply it with a damn 12" roller or hot mop. After i drown him in hot tar for applying it parallel to the direction of travel, as if trying to kill motorcyclists, I will probably blow by the burger vendors that are on here advertising their street meat, and hit the other numbered county road boulevard s that are directly south of Vasa. They are left off this route but should seriously be included to your route no matter where you opt to drive a burger into your gut...
