Written Directions

Starting in Valparaiso, follow US30 just east of Walmart and take IN49 north to the next exit. That is where the fun begins. Whenever IN2 runs along another highway, it is straight, but the rest of the time it winds up and down gentle slopes of northern Indiana. Near Valparaiso it goes by the airport, mall, and a school, but then opens up to more farmland and curves. These are mainly sweeping curves, nothing real tight, and the road is well traveled by locals. When coming into Westville, you first cross US6 and then it curves around to US421. Again where it joins US421, it is straight, but heads east to Laporte just north of Westville.

Scenery

Valparaiso University is a beautiful campus for a small school. The Chapel, along US30, is world renown for the architecture. The farmland/suburbia is along the sweeping curves east of Valpo, as locals call it. However heading east on IN2 to Laporte, you go through more farm country, but Laporte recently has promoted the ten lakes around the city. On the way in town is Albanos, pizza and Italian restaurant, and Just east of the courthouse is a great little Mexican restaurant, Mucho Mas. There are plenty of gas stations and restaurants in the towns.

Drive Enjoyment

The road is well traveled and maintained, but because of traffic beware of the crossroads. There have been fatal accidents when rounding a corner and finding cross traffic. Parts have been chip-sealed in the past few years, so you don't have to worry about potholes. There is truck traffic around Westville - US6 and US421.

Tourism Opportunities

There is a great sports bar/restaurant on US30 called Industrial Revolution in Valparaiso. They advertise mammoth hamburgers. Westville has the state penitentiary where John Dillinger escaped in the gangster era. If you followed US421 north, you would get to Michigan City and the Lake Michigan shoreline. Washington Park is the main attraction along the shore. On the way in Laporte is Albanos, pizza and Italian restaurant, and Just east of the courthouse is a great little Mexican restaurant, Mucho Mas. There are plenty of gas stations and restaurants in the towns. Never eaten at The Blue Heron north on US35 in Laporte, but it is very busy. It's right on Pine Lake.

Occasionally there are turn offs labeled "Old State Road 2" that are a couple more curves north of Valparaiso. Watch for traffic near the towns and cities, but still a fun run.

My wife and I have both done this route, each with our own Spyder RT. We live just down the road from Valpo and I was sort of shocked to see this route listed here. It's a nice little ride with transitions from city to open corn fields to woods to city. Very easy to hit another route from there up to Michigan City and the marinas where we used to boat out of for years. That was another chapter in our life and it was fun to visit places we had not been because we were usually on the lake. Overall the trail has some nice turns even for a non-leaning trike. Have fun!!
