Written Directions

From Aurora, follow the Ohio river RT 56 southwest. After you pass through Rising Sun, route 56 will head east and away from the river and it is here where you need to switch to and take it into Vevay, IN. Stay straight through town and the road will turn into Hwy 56/Route 56 and head west still hugging the river as it goes all the way to Madison, IN. From Madison take Hwy 142 north and split off on Route 62 heading northeast and up through Friendship and on to Dillsboro, IN.

Scenery

The scenic route along the Ohio river to Madison has some great views of the river, make sure to stop at Belterra Casino and have a bite to eat and try your luck on some table games. Lots of room in the parking garage to escape some rain if needed. Once you get to Madison stroll the downtown streets with unique shops and a lot of antique stores. The trip back from Madison to Aurora, take Rt 62, beautiful landscape and some great Amish farms along the way. It is one of the best scenic routes I have been on. On your trip back stop by Friendship and see the famous muzzle loading shot.

Drive Enjoyment

Road was good with plenty of turns as it follows the Ohio River for much of its path. And, there really wasn't much traffic to deal with.

Tourism Opportunities

Your traveling threw many small towns in Southeastern Indiana, a lot of places to stop, can be a day ride if you take some "breaks" along the way. Plan on a sunny day to see lots of action on the Ohio river. Have meal in Madison, walk threw downtown stores, then great ride back threw Friendship on 62.

We began in Scottsburg so used this trip in reverse. North to Austin then nice ride east to Madison. Route 56 closed at Vevay so stayed on 56/156 to Patriot where we stopped to find an allergy pill. Grocery/hardware clerk RUDE and unhelpful and no medications. Took 250 west which was a great ride with lots of curves and switchbacks. From East Enterprise the road is hilly and farm side beautiful. Back in Madison by 4pm and needed coffee as the weather was chilly. The two "coffee" shops were closed :( this ride was one of the best we have taken in Indiana.

Nice combination of roads. 62 has a lot of sharp turns with some braking. Breakfast at Camile's Cafe in downtown was great. Short ride into Clifty Falls added to the ride. Back home on 56 along the river. Sweeping corners with nice speed and view.

At Rising Sun you can take IN 156 south to Vevay where you will pick up IN 56 again. This route follows the river all the way. Be sure to stop at Shipley's in Madison for the best hamburgers in the area. Where you pick up IN 62 @ Madison you can also go south and continue through Charlestown, New Albany, Corydon, and Leavenworth where you can go to the Dock for lunch on the river.
