Written Directions

Less than a mile west of Elizabeth, IL off of US Highway 20, you will find Elizabeth Scales Mound Rd. Take it north 12 miles till it reaches the end point when the road meets Stagecoach Trail just south of Scales Mound, IL. This road splits the Galena/Freeport loop in half.

Scenery

Scenic vistas, rolling hills, farms. Exceptional fall foliage. Charles Mound, highest point in IL. just north of town of Scales Mound. In my opinion , probably the most scenic fall foliage road in this area. When you get to one end don't hesitate to turn around and head the other way on it as the views differ each way.

Drive Enjoyment

Smooth road surface, plenty of sweeping corners and elevation changes. Watch for deer, anytime of the day but especially at dawndusk. If you DON'T see one in the early morning or early evening your probably not paying attention.

Tourism Opportunities

Nothing along this route but scenery and turns.

Go a little farther north, and a little creative navigation, and you can get to New Diggings, Wi. On the weekends this little town turns into biker heaven. Great food... and hundreds of bikers ;-) Be aware that the road quality drops a little, but still safe (no gravel)

One of the best roads in the tri-state area. Elevation changes, high speed corners, has it all.
