Written Directions

Highway 22 is an old state road connecting towns across the middle of the state. You can pick it up from Clanton, AL in the west to Roanoke in the east. It turns south, west of Clanton however I have not ridden that stretch in a long while. There are no major traffic problems getting there from Montgomery, Birmingham or Atlanta..

Scenery

Drive through a nice slide of Central Alabama country side with some nice towns along the way. Slightly hilly, very rural road. Occasional logging entrance but mostly farmland and forest.

Drive Enjoyment

Smooth asphalt the entire way. Maybe one or two bad spots but a nice long ribbon of no problems. Deer are plentiful so heads up.

Tourism Opportunities

Only an occasional store along the way. Roanoke has an abundance as does Alexander City.

Great ride! Short section of road construction (less than a mile). Curves and hills make it almost impossible to psss, but it's not a high-traffic road (at least not on the weekends) so it's not too bad.
Grendey's in Roanoke is a great lunch stop for bikers. Take 431 North from AL 22 and it's on your left. Great service and good food!

Absolutely agree with the above description, and I also say, keep going past Clanton. The ride from Clanton to Selma is a great ride also. Hwy. 22 is a beautiful trip through the Black Belt of Alabama on this portion of road. Not many hills or curves, just great farmland, old homes, and open country. And historic Selma, AL is a beautiful old city.

Nice ride all along the way. Especially between Rockford and Coopers where 22 crosses the Coosa River.
