From South Tucson, take W Ajo Hwy (AKA Route 86) west for about 36 miles. Then take a left on Route 386 and head up to the top of Kitt Peak and the route's end point.
Scenery
When you start you will drive through mostly desert until you come to Highway 386. Once on 386 and heading up to Kitt Peak you will see mountains, as you get closer to the top you will see a panoramic view of the valley below and views for many miles. At the top you can also see Kitt peak National Observatory.
Drive Enjoyment
Some construction for about 5 miles on Ajo but for the most part it is rolling hills through the desert.
Tourism Opportunities
Several gas stations on the way. 2 resturants also on the way. 3 points resturant in Robles Junction is very good.
Awesome scenery & fun ride! Observatory itself is boring... the road is closed 4PM-9AM. Plenty of construction on the way with 3 gas stations to check out.

The road out of Tucson is uneventful, but standing on the floor of the canyon and looking straight up at Kitt Peak was intimidating! It was an awesome ride, hairpins all the way up and the neat observatories at the top. The ride down gave you great views of the desert landscape below with pull outs to stop and enjoy the views!
From YouTube: "EXPLORE YOUR UNIVERSE! The worlds largest collection of optical telescopes is located high above the Sonoran Desert. Kitt Peak, on the Tohono Oodham Reservation, is home to 22 optical and two radio telescopes representing dozens of astronomical research institutions."
