Written Directions

From Big Sandy on Hwy 80, take Hwy 155 north about two miles. Turn left on FM 1002, and continue to where it joins FM 852, then on to Winnsboro.

Scenery

The first several miles on 1002 has a lot of 20-30 mph curves. As it progresses further north it straightens out, but has a lot of pretty farm land. North of Hwy 2088 there it again becomes somewhat curvy, and travels through woodland until reaching Winnsboro. Approximately 32 miles. Another rider in April of 2016 added this information about the FM 852 section: "This section is particularly beautiful in the Springtime with Green Trees and Rolling Green pastures as you sweep through some nice fast curves with the occasional 30 MPH curves."

Drive Enjoyment

These are two lane farm to market roads, but are in very good condition.

Tourism Opportunities

There are cafes at each end of the route in Big Sandy and in Winnsboro, but nothing along the route except a small country grocery/gas station.

I rode this in reverse, visiting my Dad in Winnsboro, then heading south for a work event in Tyler. I rode toward the end of the day so I would see sunset to my right. Although it was an unseasonably warm day for early December (that's why I rode out to visit on the bike), the temperature drops were noticeable between hills. It was an awesome ride, with the road almost to myself. Rolling hills and wooded farmlands. I wish my passenger/wife had come along. We'll have to double back another time. I found myself not in a hurry to get to Tyler! Thanks for posting.

Rode FM852 from Winnsboro to about 14 miles till it ended at FM 2088. Instead of turning south from FM 2088 to FM 852, I continued East on FM 2088 to Bettie. However, the section of FM 852 I rode was very nice in terms of road surface with awesome curves. Some tight but mostly fast. Nice rolling hills with some trees and wide open grazing land. Very Pretty Greenery during Spring here in Texas. I'll have to try the entire route after seeing the good reviews on FM 852.
