Written Directions

The route starts in Hampton, TN and follows Route 321 all the way to Boone, NC. After 9.6 miles on 321, you must make a right turn to stay on 321. Continue for 12.9 miles, then make another right turn to stay on 321. The road will intersect Route 421 in about 30 miles. Turn right towards Boone. In about 5 miles, enter Boone city limits.

Scenery

The road goes through Cherokee and Pisgah national forest. For about 10 miles, it snakes along Watauga lake, passing through many sections of densely forested land. The road will climb about 2,000 feet and when you reach Boone, there are great views and wonderful shopping.

Drive Enjoyment

Many mountain curves and good climbs here and there. Some stretches need to be repaved, but many stretches already have been repaved and are in fantastic shape. There is no shoulder for the most part.

Tourism Opportunities

There are maybe one or two restaurants and a marina along the way. 3 gas stations, but they can be sketchy as this is the back woods area.

Bit of a lazy ride, for eastern TN, this one. Certainly enough to keep people entertained, but not that madness that people come to expect out of a eastern TN road. I guess that's because it's a main highway, and in that regard it's pretty twisty for a main slab. The part where you run along side Watauga Lake is very nice, and it slowly peters out as you go east, but not so much that it really ever becomes boring until you get east of Vilas. Great road for going east/west if you need to make up time, but still enjoy yourself, or just to look at scenery and a lake.
