Written Directions

From Interstate 26 in Erwin Tennessee, take exit 43 and turn right on TN Highway 19W. In about a mile, you will take a left onto Spivey Mountain Road / 19W. Stay on Spivey Mountain Rd / 19W for 13 miles then turn left onto Hunting Dale Road. Continue 5 miles then make a left onto NC-197. This turns into TN-395 / Rock Creek Road. Follow it for 14 miles until you arrive in the town of Erwin TN.

Scenery

Along this route you will experience beautiful mountain views, waterfalls, rolling creeks, and the Nolichucky River. With some research you can find a few hidden waterfalls along the way to stop at. It's common to see wildlife as you ride, so be safe.

Drive Enjoyment

The route has multiple turns and switchbacks with a few sweeping curves. As the route travels between states the road conditions often vary. The first section in the Tennessee side is in good condition, but watch for loose gravel in some turns especially after rains. The North Carolina side's surface is slightly older, but still in good shape. The second section of Tennessee road is also in decent shape as on Summer 2017.

Tourism Opportunities

There are a few amenities along the route. No gas stations until you get back to Erwin Tennessee. You can camp almost anyway a long the way as most of the time you are in National Forrest. On the last section of the route, Rock Creek Park is at the summit of the mountain after your decent. There is a small day fee ($2 or $3) but they have grills and cookout areas, camping, and a swimming pond if you want to freeze in cold mountain stream water. On Huntdale Road there is a wooden bridge across the creek. It is usually locked but you can park right in front of the gate. It is neat spot for pictures of it and the nice little valley right there. around 5 pm, you might see deer coming out of the woods to graze. You can stay stopped for 20 minutes and not see a single car go by.

As you can see on the map TN 395 isn't much special until the mile or so before it turns into North Carolina 197 at the border. Then things get properly fun before dialing it down a notch around Poplar, NC. Lots of nice views, lots of nice twisties and sweepers. It's worth the boring bit of TN 395 to get here, and it's in the area of a bunch of sweet roads, as well.
