RANGER'S OVERALL RATING:
"Scenery
This ride provides a mix of scenery including views across forested areas with Mt. Hood in the distance, well maintained farms and 45-year-old forests.
The Springwater Road segment of this ride provides an outstanding opportunity to photograph your bike with Mt. Hood in the background. The road itself is too narrow to safely stop for a photograph, but there are several driveways and a few parking areas that will allow you to frame a memorable snapshot from a safe location.
Redland Road, the second segment of this ride, passes through forest, some farmland and a semi-rural area with a few small retail establishments. The views are delightful, but close up and not as dramatic as the views with Mt. Hood in the background.
Drive Enjoyment
Springwater Road is mostly straightaway and level with easy curves which allowing a rider to enjoy the great scenery. The road is well kept, and the only special caution is to keep an eye out for debris brough onto the road by farm machinery. The elevation change is steady, gradual and right for most any rider.
Redland Road, the second passage on this ride, has more twist, turns and elevation changes than the first segment. While still appropriate for most riders, this passage demands a bit more attention than the Springwater Road section. At sometimes of the year, moss on the road presents a hazard.
You can see all the elevation changes in a graph which was posted as a photo on 1/26/2021.
Tourism Opportunities
Along Springwater Road you will pass Milo McIiver state park. This is a full-service state park which offers camping, fishing, river access, disk golf and a self-guided tour of a fish hatchery. Please note there is a fee to use the park.
The Viewpoint Restaurant and Lounge is on Springwater road as well, only about a mile from the park. This is a year-round diner restaurant which offers seasonal outdoor seating. It also has a small convenience store named “McIver Outpost.” It is a nice lunch stop after exploring the park. While it is not a “bike bar” a fair number of motorcyclists visit the viewpoint. Cross Springwater Road on foot from the Viewpoint Restaurant for one of the best views on this ride.
The first half of Redland Road doesn’t have any facilities. As you approach Oregon City a few restaurants and small markets are found along the road. A fuel station with ethanol free fuel is at the intersection of Redland and Fishers Mill Road. All services and the interstate are within a few miles of the ride endpoint.
