Written Directions

Mount Magazine is on Highway 309 between Paris and Havana. Access can be from Highway 22 at the north end or Highway 10 from the south end.

Scenery

This ride includes Mount Magazine State Park, the highest point between the Appalachians and the Rockies at just under 3,000 feet. There are breathtaking views, unusual flora and fauna and lots of wildlife. On the weekends, you can watch hang gliders and eagles soar. The views of the valleys below is really breath taking!

Drive Enjoyment

The road surface qualities are average. There are some sweepers and twisties but it is not extremely challenging. The best part of this ride is the scenery.

Tourism Opportunities

There is a full service restaurant, lodge, campgrounds and rentals in the state park. The visitor center is a nice place to learn about the mountain.

Nice road with curves, elevation changes and great views. At the top, Mt Magazine Lodge is a great place to stop for lunch or just for a cup of coffee.

A nice ride, but both ends of highway-309 end up at flat, straight roads. You have to ride a lot of nothing to get to Mt. Magazine.

This is a fun ride. While there may be better ones in the state, you have to love the mix of sweeping curves, switchback turns, elevation changes, and beautiful views.

Just for the record; Mount Magazine is often called "the highest point between the Appalachians and the Rockies", but there are many parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota with higher elevations. Sorry, but it is just an old tale to make Arkansans feel better about themselves. Like people from Dallas who still believe the Cowboys are a good football team.
