Written Directions

Begin at the Virginia/West Virginia border near the small community of Sweet Chalybeate. Head north on rt. 311 for 6.5 miles, bear right on to Rt. 159. Remain on Rt 159 for 12 miles where Rt. 159 becomes Rt. 60. Remain on Rt. 60 toward Covington. Once in Covington follow signs to Rt. 220 or Hot Springs, VA. Head north on Rt. 220 toward Hot Springs. Remain on Rt. 220 to Monterey, VA.

Scenery

Mountain valleys, tree lined roads, scenic overlooks, waterfalls, historic landmarks. WOW! This is a continuation of a trip listed in West Virginia (- Peterstown to Sweet Springs).

Road Quality: 4

Super nice road quality. Hills, mountains, valleys, twisties, sweepers, cruisers. Something for everyone.

Added by bmerryder (2/18/12): The mountain pass is twisty and there are no opportunities for gawking, after that there are miles of valley views and rolling hills, streams and more hills, idyllic.

Drive Enjoyment

Super nice road quality. Hills, mountains, valleys, twisties, sweepers, cruisers. Something for everyone. Added by bmerryder (2/18/12): The first 10 miles has a perfectly cambered mountain pass before beautiful rolling terrain takes over. The mountain pass is unlike any I've ridden, the cambers tilt into the slope making cornering a true joy, smooth well maintained

Tourism Opportunities

Anything from small towns, mom & pop eateries to world class resorts like the Homestead. Golf anyone?

Very nice ride. Plenty of good curves and also some sections you can really turn it on. Lots of other roads nearby that are also good rides. I ride parts of this route quite often.

A nice cruiser road in its own right. It can be taken at a brisker pace for a more exciting time on a sportier bike, but don't bother going 220 through Covington where the speed limit drops to a ridiculous 35 miles an hour. Couple that with the fact that there is always heavy traffic through this area and unless you're fine with pushing your bike down the road it's really not worth the bother unless you need to get down that road specifically for something, or are in it for nothing but the scenery.
