Written Directions

This route was taken as a side trip enroute to the New River Gorge. Elkins, the start point, is located between Interstate 79 and 81, near the north end of the Monongahela National Forest. Summerville is located on 19, west of Charleston. 72.5 miles from Elkins to Mill Point on 219 then another 63 miles along 39/55 to Summerville.

Scenery

You will start into the hills with numerous pull-offs to stop and admire the views. At the top is the Elk River Ski Resort at Salty Fork. The hills flatten out slightly as you turn east on 39/55 through the beautiful Monongahela National Forest toward Summerville.

Road Quality: 5

Seemed every corner was highly engineered new asphalt through along 219 past Valley Head. Many banked curves and switch backs 219. The road to Summerville too was great with fewer hills. Can't say enough about that section of 219. Corners engineered so steeply that the elevation change is quite noticeable. Total miles 126, about 3hrs 15 mins start to finish..

Roadside Amenities:: 3

Elkins and Summerville are both loaded with accommodation and places to eat. The short ride in between does not have a lot of things to do other than enjoy the scenery and ride!

I rode this route over Father's Day weekend June 2010. What a ride! But with the severe winter this area had there is a lot of patching and some rough spots. When riding through Richwood look for the beatuiful little church and the murals on buildings. I had ridden through and was thinking about them and 2 miles out , I turned around, went back and took pix.

Update from West Virginia’s Road Ranger (July 31st, 2020): I can only speak for Elkins to Valley Head, but the pavement is very good between those places, and I would suspect further south on 219. Check www.wv511.org for any possible construction.

add a T to this trip, taking 219 south past Lewisburg to Union, sweeping S curves, great views, high quality road all the way down. Amazing ride, highly recommend it (I did not take the east/west road, which sounds lovely, but 219 is one of the best rides if you love curve after curve on first rate pavement (near the Greenbrier after all, have to keep all those corporate types happy.)
