Written Directions

- Start Salem, VA and take VA route 311 to Paint Bank, VA - Now get on VA route 18 and take it to Covington, VA - In Covington, VA, now get on US hwy 220 and head north through Hot Springs and Warm Springs, VA - In Warm Springs, VA, switch to VA 39 heading east. Take 39 through Goshen and all the way down to Lexington, VA - In Lexington, VA, get on US hwy 11 and take this south all the way down to the Roanoke-Salem area. Note hwy 11 merges with I-81 at one point.

Scenery

Excellent scenery! You'll be traveling through the Appalachians mountains and two National Forest (George Washington NF and Jefferson NF). You'll also enjoy some wonderful river scenery as you travel along the Maury River. The route also rises up thorough the Goshen Pass.

Drive Enjoyment

Very good 2 lane roads and twisties along much of the path. Another good thing is that the traffic is fairly light.

Tourism Opportunities

Plenty of restaurants, camping, shopping, and parking.

Good route. Even better if you take the Blue Ridge Parkway instead of Rt.11 back to Roanoke. You can pick it up pretty easy by taking Rt.60 from Lexington to Buena Vista and then look for the signs. Make sure to fuel up before getting on the Parkway. (I found this out the hard way)

Good ride, enjoyable, lots of curves, but not overtaxing. I enjoyed much more than The Dragons Tail. You can enjoy the view on the ride.

I have ridden RT220 from Covington to Warm Springs and even up to RT250 in Monterey, many times. I prefer running this route going northbound. The twisties are mostly on the uphill side going from Covington north.

Once you reach RT39 or RT250 you can go East or West and continue on some of the best riding roads in the area. Plan out your day, you can easily spend all day on the RT220 and RT250 loop. There are some nice hometown places to eat along the way, but they are scattered pretty far apart, so again play your day accordingly.
