Written Directions

This route is a simple straightforward 46.2 mile ride that takes about an hour and runs between Sanford NC and Asheboro NC. There are some great places to eat in downtown Asheboro and the Zoo too. You can pickup Route 42 off of HWY in Sanford and just follow the signs to Asheboro.

Scenery

It has the feel of old back country Carolina roads with very little traffic on weekends especially Sundays. Lots of trees and creek crossings where you can feel the temperature drop 5-10 degrees in less than 500 ft. A chance to see some old abandoned brick buildings still in great shape along the water. Rolling hills and sweeping turns keep your attention and you'll wish the ride was longer.

Drive Enjoyment

Resurfaced around 2014 and consistent for the length of the route. Also not super leafy in the fall as many of the trees are well off the road in stretches. No scary shoulder conditions or blind drives. Never had a problem with gravel but watch for grass clippings in the summer.

Tourism Opportunities

There are a couple of simple gas stations on the route. Otherwise nothing to really make you want to stop for hours. Once you get to the Asheboro though, the downtown has some great places to check out for food etc. A cool town and its got animals at the zoo!

Nice rural ride. Covered bridge from old 42 in Pocket, NC is a nice stop. Ole Gilliam Mill Park is across 42.

The day that I rode this trip included this stretch. I went from Asheboro to Sanford that day. I was just out riding that day and it was a nice ride for little traffic.
