Written Directions

Take US276 beginning in Brevard, NC and travel south just across the NC/SC border at Caesar's Head State Park.

Scenery

The route begins in the French Broad River Valley at Brevard, NC. Picturesque farms quickly transition to mountain cabins as you climb towards the South Carolina border. There are views across the valley, but very few places to pull over and enjoy them. At the end of the route take a right turn into Caesar's Head State Park. This is worth some time off-the-bike. Follow the signs along a walking path to an overlook. On a clear day you will be able to see more than 50 miles. Looking west, in the distance, you are viewing the southern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Drive Enjoyment

The road is seldom busy. The ascent is quick, with most of the curves easy to negotiate without having to downshift. Lack of traffic and the ability to take turns at full throttle make for a fun ride.

Tourism Opportunities

Caesar's Head State Park is were you will want to dismount and look around. The park has picnic tables, a small gift shop and plenty of long range views. I suggest grabbing a to-go lunch from Big Mike's Diner in Brevard, NC (only 17 mile away) and enjoying it while watching the clouds roll across the Blue Ride Mountains.

As of 9/26/2020, there are two articles related to Caesar's Head. One takes you from Brevard ("Caesar's Ascent") and the other from Hwy 11 ("Caesar's Head"). Going to attempt a cross post in both. Rode Hwy 276 on 9/19/20 from Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 to Brevard, NC. Video is not excellent, but will give you some ideas of the road quality as of 2020. https://youtu.be/Pe-zINWqMz4 Picking up from Hwy 11, it's a spirited ride. The road condition has deteriorated with some spots where the road has been undermined and some signs of pavement sloughing. (Rated 4 for the excellent curves, but only "fair" road condition) Automobile traffic is courteous. Plenty of pullouts allow slower traffic to let others pass. The park at Caesar's Head was closed when i passed. It was a Saturday and they had reached capacity. Watch for people parking on the roadside on days like this.

I did this route almost every week the fall if 2020. Great scenery and fun twisties to take. I need to get on it with a sporty bike and fewer tourists in the way.
