Written Directions
Start this ride in Oak Creek, CO, by driving South from US40 near Steamboat Springs or North from I-70 from Wolcott. The route is NE out of Oak Creek along CR27/Twenty Mile Road to US 40 near Hayden, CO.
Scenery
'Typical' Western Colorado, open range with low scrub - more lush than Grand Junction. Beautiful , although dotted with an occasional coal operation or other commercial activity. Otherwise it's wide open. Rural, pretty, pleasant, but by Colorado standards it's just OK. Wide open skies, no trees, some lush ground cover.
Drive Enjoyment
Smooth, good pavement, with good paint in Aug 2017 when I found no ruts or potholes and it's well marked. Corners are not marked consistently, although there are few obstructions so you'll see them well in advance. You can see through most curves. Curves are tight enough to be interesting and fun at moderate speeds, but not too tight. Great road.
Tourism Opportunities
If you need anything before getting back to US 40 you'd better get it in Oak Creek - virtually no retail of any kind on this road. But it's not a long road - only 20 miles.
Motorcycle Road Additional info
Wow, what a great motorcycle road. Loaded with fun sweepers and open curves, very little traffic, and plenty of room to pass, if necessary. A great way to top off a day on Hwy 131 and/or 134.
