Written Directions

Start this route just south of a town called Little Lake, CA off of US Highway 395 you will need to turn west on 9 Mile Canyon Road (later this road changes names to Sherman Pass Rd & Forest Rt. 22S05). Take this till it T's into Rt. 99 (Mtn. Hwy. 99 & Kern River Hwy.) where you need to go right and follow this in to and through the town of Johnsondale, CA. After Johnsondale, the road changes to Parker Pass road and take it the route's end when it intersects with Great Western Divide Hwy. See the map above and follow the road signs on this road..

Scenery

Exceptional scenery. Large trees and many distance views along the way from high altitudes. The terrain is mountainous with extreme drop offs on the edges of the road. Guardrails are few.

Drive Enjoyment

The road is 2 lanes but 18' narrow. Some areas are in need of repair but not too bad. This a very twisty road with excessive grades. In fact, the road is so twisty you'll not encounter any trucks or RV's.

Tourism Opportunities

Not too many. Best to carry your own snack. You'll be taking this one for the scenery and the twisties.

Great ride during late summer to early fall. Road is getting "goaty", but still a beautiful mountian ride.

Took this ride a little early and it hadn’t officially opened up yet, so there was debris on the road you had to navigate around but the road itself was good and the views were stunning! Make sure to stop at the General Store on the corner before entering...friendly people with updates as to the road condition and lots of pups & kitties to visit with while you take a break

I took this route recently with a friend and we had the best time navigating the nearly 2 lane wide road!

If you like twisties and getting into beautiful remote areas this is the route for you. My brother and I traveled this packed for camping from East to West, him on his BMW 1200 and me on a Duke 390. Be sure and fill up at the gas station just a few miles South of the turn off on 395. There is gas at the stop midway mentioned by the other rider but when we arrived there they were closed and it was 5:30 so don't plan on supplies or gas there. Can't describe the scenery on this ride, it's just too diverse in beauty you've just got to ride it yourself. When you reach the Kern River there are camping opportunities for reservation or and overflow campground.
