Written Directions
To start this route you will need to get to Clifton, MS (which is just a mile or two north east of the larger town of Lorman Mississippi). From Clifton, take 552 west and accross the Natchez Trace Parkway. Follow the winding 552 for about 20 miles as it eventually turns north and then north east and enters the town of Port Gibson. At Port Gibson, turn left on route 61 for a few blocks, then right on route 18 for about a mile back to the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Scenery
Riding the Natchez Trace is truly a ride through history (see Natchez Trace listing) however, it is not really a motorcyclist's "dream road." Low speed limits and long straight sections, with trees and more trees, can make a motorcyclist's throttle hand twitch for something new. In Mississippi, get off the Trace and ride on Route 552 for a while. As an added bonus, stop along the way and explore the deserted ruins of an old plantation.
Drive Enjoyment
Route 552 is paved and in generally good shape. There are a number of twists and rolling hills. Trees come close to the road, so long sight-lines are not always possible. After traveling on the Natchez Trace for some time, you will need to wake up your motorcycle skills.
Tourism Opportunities
If you pick up 552 from the south, you will come to the Windsor Plantation Ruins in approximately 12 miles. It will be on the left down a short gravel drive. Don't miss it -- there are no big signs since it's not a commercial tourist site. What remains of the ruins is a series of 24 columns and some remaining iron work. Never-the-less, it stands there as a reminder of the great plantations from a time gone by.
