Due to it's ancient geological history, the state's topography is mostly comprised of flat expanses interrupted by smaller sections of rolling hills and covered by prairie grasses. As you move from east to west, the climate becomes more dry and windswept. The Flint Hills area is the most notable scenic area within the Sunflower State.
