Written Directions

You need to start in Highlands, NC. From their take Highway 28 north-northwest toward Franklin.

Scenery

On this route you will go through Nantahala Gorge with a view of the waterfall from the top of the road. Near the gorge is the Dry Fall waterfall, which you can actually drive behind the fall. You will drive along Fontana Lake (which borders the Great Smokey Mountain National Park) and end up at Deal's Gap.

Drive Enjoyment

This road is Highway 28 starting in Highland and ending at Deal's Gap. The road has lots of twists, sharp curves, but it is fairly level all the way through. If you haven't been on this route you need to try it. The views are beautiful and the road is never straight. The road is very smooth, so you'll ride with ease.

Tourism Opportunities

There are pull off spots all along this route, even in the area along the river. You can take a swim to cool off during the hot day. You won't find many gas stations, shops, or restaurants along this route, so you need to stop at the towns that are on this route. You will ride through Highland, Franklin, Lauada and Fontana Village.

Kinda scary that this is a 'main' route and yet the road looks so very perilous if you're taking it any real speed. The road slims down pretty good and you definitely get the feeling that you're high up without even having to look off the side of the road and want to soil yourself. I would imagine getting used to this road takes awhile, which would be why the out-of-staters take it so slow. As such we were hard pressed to make any time on the road, perhaps we were just unlucky. At least when you're putzing along in traffic you have some great views, that probably even look that much better in autumn colors.

Last time we rode it was July 2019, traffic was heavy, however it was around the 4th of July and it may have been on the weekend, don't recall now. Road was in great shape, the scenery is fantastic! Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are pretty cool! A small trek to walk behind Dry Falls, but worth it. This appears to be the same ride as McR "The Waterfall Byway Along The Cullasaja River Gorge".
