Start in Towanda and ride north to Dwight on Old Route 66 (Not I-55 as is shown on the map!)
Scenery
Flat, open farmland with historic signs along the way.
Drive Enjoyment
The map shows traveling on I-55, but actually you'll be on a two lane blacktop that runs adjacent to it and is marked as Rt 66. The original Rt 66 pavement is beside that. You can park anywhere if you want to take photos while standing on the authentic pavement that is now deteriorated.
Tourism Opportunities
Must stop in Odell for a photo op at the 1930s restored Standard filling station and in Dwight at the Texaco station. No gas at either, but serve as tourist info' centers---very cool!Definitely eat at the Rt 66 Family Restaurant in Dwight caddy-corner from the restored Texaco station. Very good food and a favorite with the locals.
We took this road but rode it all the way to Joliet. It's a fun road that everyone should take. Plenty of nostalgia to see as you stop often and made it fun thru a very hot ride. We picked it up at Chenoa and went to Braidwood. Great to see all the old places and some of the old road.

I rode Route 66 from Chicago to Springfield. It's a nice ride in general. Plenty of things to stop and look at along the way. You are mostly on frontage roads, but that's okay. It does take you through a few towns and allows you to see some of the roadside attractions. It's a great ride, and on my bucket list, I plan to ride Route 66 from Chicago to CA.
