Being a flatlander from Delaware, I enjoyed the ride. Roads were in good condition and not too much traffic while I was there. Rode from Hayesville to Robinsville to Tellico Plains to Ducktown and back to Hayesville. Awesome day ride!

Been out and back Cherohala few times, I don't know what one could add that hasn't already been said. Bald River Falls is east of Tellico Plains, road to falls is some 7-8 miles from Tellico Plains. Be sure to check that out, only 3 mile ride south of Skyway to falls. Ironworks Grill right across the street from Harley dealer is good place to eat, sits right on the river. Cherohala Skyway Visitors Center in Tellico Plains, about a mile and half west of Ironworks Grill/Harley dealer has lodging info, free maps, Museum Gift Shop has t-shirts and such. Museum worth checking out, especially if your looking to kill some time waiting for some weather pass.

Love this road, especially if you do the Cherohala/Dragon Loop as one ride.
Terrific scenery.

I've done the CH a few times in the last 3 years. You really can't beat the views. It's not a super challenging route but enough turns to keep it exciting at times. can't wait to go back

I live about one hour ride from either end of this. One of my favorite roads to ride. Elevation changes from 1,500 to 5,600 feet. Temps will drop about 20 degrees from bottom to top. Mostly sweepers, but almost always back and forth, with not many straights. Plenty of pull offs and view points for stops and photo ops. 55 miles from end to end, with no food or gas in between. Pavement is good, No trucks (or commercial vehicles) allowed. Beautiful in spring (azaleas and rhododendron blooming) and fall (all the colors of hardwoods changing). Speed limit is 45 on NC side and 40 on TN side. Curves are superelevated (banked). A couple curves are compound, or decreasing radius and can be tricky, but are clearly marked with extra warning signs and painted markings. about 6 miles east of Tellico Plains is a turnoff to ride back about another 5 miles to Bald River Falls. Definitely worth the ride back, any time of year. For campers there is the Indian Boundary Campground with a lake and horse camp as well. Excellent facilities, about 12 miles from Tellico Plains. This 55 mile stretch is just as beautiful and far less crowded than the best of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Excellent views of 5,000 to 6,000 foot mountains off as far as 70 miles away can be seen. Riding east to west is entirely different than west to east, so try it both directions if you have the time. Incorporate it with a ride on the Dragon, and then make a roundtrip up highway 360 (in TN) to Hwy 72, back over to 129 (the Dragon), Or take the Foot Hills Parkway into Townsend, TN or all the way to Wears Valley, TN.

Like the Blue Ridge Parkway, it’s easy to get into the flow of the turns. Well maintained road, beautiful sights, lined well and plenty of areas to stop to take pictures, rest, view the scenery. Challenging in spots with switchbacks and tight turns.

Awesome road with great views especially in the fall with colors. Some tight turns and nice sweepers. Really fun with light traffic. Watch out for wildlife, have had to stop for momma bear and her cubs. Several pull offs and overlooks.

With over 150,000 miles on motorcycles this is, without at doubt, A1 and 5++. Less traffic that others roads in this area, no commercial trucks allowed, sharp technical turns plus sweepers that encourage you to roll on the throttle. Large range views with pullout so you can stop and take it all in. Any trip to this area is the country MUST include this road. Without it you have not experienced the best in the Southeast.

Did it the same day that the Dragon. It’s a big loop from Robbinsville. It’s not a Roller Coaster like the Dragon , but you can have some fun and the scenery is better !

Rode this after the Dragon. Not any tough twisties but spectacular views. Got a little chilly in the middle at the higher altitude in the late fall. Not a lot of bathrooms. Its in the park so it;s remote.

I've done this route and I like it much better than the "Dragon". There were a lot less cars and bikes and the number of twisties are just as challenging.
I started in Murphy, NC and went West on 74 to 68, then North to Tellico Plains TN. (But, on that route you can also take 294 from 74 and it will bring you to 68 for a taste of what's in store for the most challenging sections...)
The from Tellico Plains, the Cherohala takes you back to to 129 (the Dragon) then south to 74 West and back into Murphy.
If done right, there is plenty of time to stop for lunch in Tellico Plans, then head up to the "mile high" elevation marker at about three quarters of the way through Skyway and make it back to Murphy in around 5 hours.

First got to visit the Harley on 165 just past 360 coming from Telico Plains. On hot days the peak adds nice cool air when heading over pass.

I rode this road after riding Tail of the Dragon. The only places that I encountered traffic (a handful of bikes that to a couple of miles to pass) were at the beginning and the end of the ride. Outside of those spots, it felt like I had the road to myself. It was a gorgeous late summer day when I rode the skyway and the views seemed endless and the colors vibrant. As far as I'm concerned, this is the epitome of a cruiser road.

Not as challenging as the Tail of the Dragon, but very scenic in its own right. And a lot more laid back. 43 miles of beautiful enjoyable riding from Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, North Carolina. Take time to visit Tellico Plains. Great places to eat, a local arts centers, antiques, pottery, ice cream and a great bakery.

A fun road with easy sweepers and lots of altitude changes. There are a few must stop turnouts for photo ops and don't forget to leave time to visit some of the waterfalls. Look at what you would think are telephone poles, they are actually a way for flying squirrels to cross the road.

I spent a week in the area in 2018 and found the skyway to be my favorite part. I hit the skyway one Sunday morning, and I did not see another car the whole way down and back! stunning views, make sure to pull off along the way to check out some of the overlooks! Warning- no services on the skyway make sure you have gas!

Rode 8/31/2018 (Friday, mid-morning).
Rode the Dragon first, then cut through the Joyce Kilmer Forest to the Cherohala. Traffic was sparse.
While not a curvy as the Dragon, this road has a lot of sweeping curves (with some tight curves thrown in to keep you awake!) and has great views that the Dragon is missing. It has significant changes in elevation.
If you have already checked the Dragon off of your bucket list (it is, after all, "The Dragon"), and you could only ride this or the Dragon, I'd pick the Cherohala every time.

Started off superb, but the mountain weather and fog rolled in so hard and fast that it slowed me down to a crawl. Got soaked, and currently drying off in the sun @ Deals Gap, getting ready for the dragon (review to follow). The skyway road quality is great, lots of predictable (yet full) turns, and lots of altitude changes. Really enjoyed this road, I just wish the weather was better.

This is a great ride, worth doing more than once.
If you are staying near the Robbinsville area, you can make a loop out of it by picking up 68 near Tellico and taking that up to 411. Then take 411 up to 72, and 72 down to 129 back into Robbinsville area. That'll make your loop. You'll even have time left over to modify the loop with the Foothills Parkway if you want.
