just FYI...the Beartooth Pass does not open in the spring until Memorial Day weekend, usually....and closes with the first good snowfall. Wyoming does not plow the road so sometimes you can go up from Red Lodge to the Wyoming line. When in the area you should also ride Chief Joseph Scenic Byway which intersects Beartooth Hwy east of Cooke City and ends north of Cody, WY. Often you can go on Chief Joseph from Cody to Cooke City but not over the pass. And the road from the North entrance to YNP at Gardiner to Cooke City is usually open year round.

Scott (shown) and I rode Beartooth Hwy June 13, 2018 (it was closed June 11 and 15 due to snow), and it was truly awesome. The views were fantastic, the road was high-quality...and the wind was fearsome. We couldn't stop at the summit sign because the wind was too strong. Early June may be too early depending on the season--check every day! (A small group had to abandon their bikes on the 14th or 15th due to a blizzard, so...as pretty as it is, the environment is highly subject to change!)

Such a fun route with breathtaking scenery! We decided to ride through on a whim while leaving Sturgis and heading to a friend's ranch in Paradise Valley, MT. Riding East to West was definitely a great way to experience the pass and descending into Yellowstone was very beautiful and relaxing. I can't wait to ride through here again soon!

I rode part of this route turning when it connects south with Chief Josef highway on 01 August 2017 coming back from British Columbia. That was not to be missed either. The road itself was still under construction then. The new surface was so new the blacktop was leaking oil, had small pea gravel scattered all over it, and the opposite lane was 5" lower with nasty grooves. Impatient drivers, winds gusting over 40 MPH in spots completed the entertainment for me.
I did find one spot near the top on the north side of the highest elevation that had two mountain lakes. It was a scene like something you might see out of the Sound of Music. I had to get off for a while and take it all in. Well worth it I would think, IF the road is done now.

212 starts out in Red Lodge, Montana and continues over Bear Tooth Path into Wyoming. How I got there was looking for a T-Shirt from Bear Tooth as Harley Davidson. As it turns out, that meant in Red Lodge. Instead I turned and went over the pass and all the way into Wyoming.
The road then was pretty awful. I was on it on 1 August this year and they were in the middle of a repaving project. 6" worth of difference from one lane to the other. Brand new blacktop, that was so fresh it was still leaking oil. Loose gravel on the new surface that hadn't been cleaned up yet. The other side was grooved badly.
It was not the most entertaining road under those conditions, especially with impatient drivers behind me trying to make like they were on some sort of road race course.

This is one of the best rides we have ever had if you plan to ride the area check weather before going. When we started up weather was cool but nice to ride in when we reached the top light snow was falling and temp was 34 degrees. But the view is great and scenery was beautiful there are numerous rides also close to go on.

Rode the Beartooth Highway from Red Lodge to Cooke City on 8/22/16 - two days before they temporarily closed it due to ice and snow!
What an amazing ride - be sure and have warm winter gloves and warm layers to put on toward the top, at 10,947 feet, it gets windy and chilly.
Loved the descent from the summit towards Cooke City - just beautiful scenery when you get back below the treeline. Everyone should ride this at least once!

The Beartooth Pass is right in my backyard so I ride it several times a year & I never get tired of it. We've run into snow in July and 50 MPH wide gusts, neither were fun, but even that was a great ride! Plan on layers, cool air, weather changes and eye candy galore. I recommend continuing south to also take in the Chief Joseph Hwy towards Cody instead of going to over to Cooke City/Silver Gate if you really want a fun ride. You will never forget it!

I can't really add to the comments of others. I'm amazed at all the giant mountains in Montana. One could ride these roads everyday and not be bored. Hwy.296 south towards Cody is just fantastic too.

Been on this road many of time. It's gets better all the time. High mtn vista's, wildlife and lots of curves. I would like to mention that more than half of this highway is in Wyoming. So needs to be enter as being in Montana and Wyoming.

Made the trip over Beartooth early September 2010. Sunny in Red Lodge and 45 degrees. cold (36 degrees) and rain on the other side. Weather changes fast so be prepared if you go in the fall. The following day the pass was closed due to heavy snow. What a beautiful ride. Maybe saw 6 vehicles and no bikes. Made the ride alone and certainly wish I could have shared this with the wife and riding neighbors. I have traveled all over the West and this was the best--so far. Next year Alaska.

We took the ride East -- West in early August and dropped over to Cody. Coming out of Red Lodge was not real exciting, but once we got into the mountains some really world class views. Hwy 296 back over to Cody was another worthwhile motorcycle ride.

I've rode Beartooth Pass 3 different times now and each time i'm amazed at how beautiful it is. Each time was riding in August and all 3 times we had different weather. 50/sunny the first time. 30s/Snow the second time and 40s/Rain the third time. I would highly recommend riding this road if you are reading this and debating whether to make the trip. Just make sure to bring the proper riding gear and you will have no issues. The views are incredible! I might be different but it doesn't get old to me. Definitely will ride again

I had planned the trip to Wyoming and Montana with the purpose of riding the Beartooth pass. This ride did not disappoint me. At times it is hard to focus on the road as it switches back and forth. The views are amazing! I would recommend that you make the trip and ride the pass

I have ridden this road twice now. I can only recommend that you check the weather before you head up this road even if its nice in Red Lodge when you leave that has no bearing on what the weather will be doing up on the mountain! As for excitement it will keep you on the edge of your saddle. This roads main draw is the elevation and switch backs if you time it right there is very little traffic on this road. As for the 5-0 I haven't seen much up on this road but then again I have only do it twice. Enjoy this is a real gem.

Love this ride! Red Lodge is such a cool little town that has a biker/ski resort feel to it. Bear-tooth Pass itself (the part with all the steepness/turns) is a short ride, but if you love switch backs this is definitely for you. The view from Rock Creek Visa is really cool and lets you get a good photo of the road you just traveled. Once you get to the top its bare with little veg due to such high elevation. This is a must for any biker as I couldn't keep the smile off my face. Heated gear will help you as the tops of these mountains are bloody cold.

Me and a buddy rode this June 26, 2019. Traffic was very light, still pretty cold. Once we got close to the summit it started sleeting. There was already about a foot of snow off pavement and plowed drifts up to 7ft high. Road was only wet in areas where melting snow was running out into the road. They had the lift running for ski and snowboarders at the summit as well. Scenery was great with plenty of pull-off spots for admiring mother nature. We doubled back and took the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. Every bit as good as the Beartooth.

I've had the opportunity to ride Bear Tooth Pass twice. It is a great ride with beautiful scenery. Both times were in late July. The first time, it was sunny and warm in Cody and very windy and 45 degrees on Bear Tooth Pass. The second time it was raining with snow mixed in and the wind was blowing fairly hard as well. Bring your cold weather jacket and gloves for this ride.
