Did this ride and then some. Started out from Oceanside in SD County and went all the way to San Fran and back down in a week. Best motorcycle trip yet. Pulled in at Solvang to see the California Vintage Motorcycle Museum. Just North of San Simeon is a beach full of elephant seals. Stayed at a B&B in Monterey, then road into San Fran. Came down through Hollister and took the CA-25. Great middle of nowhere road. Stop thinking about it and do this ride.

Wife and I planned a 10 day riding vacation over the winter holidays 2012. We chose the ride Highway 1 from Santa Monica to San Francisco and back to LA. I've been wanting to ride this road for many years. Weather was dry, sunny and cool with temps in the mid 50's everyday. We took 4 days to ride north with stops in Buellton, San Simeon, Monterey and SF. Breathtaking images, views, scenery. Take your time to see the sights, sounds and things to do. We toured Hearst Castle, lunch in Lucia, Elephant Seal Beach, McWay waterfall trail at Pfieffer State Park, Nepenthe Cafe, whale watching charter in Monterey, Carmel by the Sea, Half Moon Bay, etc. We traveled less than 150 miles per day. Absolutely stunning ride and one we will remember for the remainder of our lives. The ride south back to LA was equally as impressive with the ocean on our right and the turnouts are easier to navigate than riding north. Bixby Bridge, Big Sur, Canbria, Morro Bay,SLO are just a few of the highlights.

Hands down the most beautiful road in the country. I grew up in Cambria and have ridden this road more times than I can remember, it NEVER gets old. The views are incredible, traffic can be heavy and roads are subject to closure. But it is well worth the effort to get there and ride it. Winds can be gusty, summer can be foggy, but again it is worth the effort. Don't just limit your self to the Hwy, Morro Bay has some great places to ride and just check out the town, there is a short road from MB to Los Osos Valley road that goes by the golf course, that is a mini 17 mile drive, very scenic. Get lost in Cambria as well, it is also worth seeing, a beautiful town. If you have the time ride Santa Rosa Creek road in Cambria. It will take you to Hwy 46, or you can cross 46 and take Old Creek Road to Cayucos, both are must ride roads. For a special treat look to the east while on Hwy 1 just before the town of San Simeon, and there is a possibility you will see Zebras grazing alongside cattle. They are leftovers from WR Hearst's private zoo. I am certain this is the only only place in America you can see Zebras grazing open range.Across from the Castle there is the cove, San Simeon state beach and one of the best beaches to swim in or just sit back and take it in. More to do and see than can be done in just a day, but go ride this road, it is one you will never forget.

Went this route taking my wife for her first time. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a fantastic time . We stopped at Lucia for lunch and felt like we were in another world with the views. I would take this route again as soon as possible

Great road!!! (Although my absolute favorite is still the Trail Ridge Road through the Rockie Mountain Nat'l Park). We have ridden the entire road from Santa Barbara to the Oregon border (and beyond) --beautiful scenery and an all around great riding road for riding. Parts of it are easy enough for even a fairly inexperienced rider but there are sections that require more skill (north of Bodega Bay). Take it at your own pace and you should be fine. (Watch out for motor homes and big trucks in your lane though!) The area around Tomales Bay is very charming. Make sure to stop at the north end of the Golden Gate to check out the display there.

I've done this road in both directions lately. It was foggy and cold on the northbound ride. What was really cool was that the fog, as it traveled up the hillside jumped over the road so it felt like riding in a tunnel. I traveled south last weekend and it was very clear. There are three construction projects going on now. These cause some delays, due to single lane traffic. The wait is seldom more than 5 minutes. This is a great ride either way, but I prefer the northbound route.

Just rode this stretch from Cambria to Carmel and back on Friday 10/23/2009, beautiful day no fog, fairly light traffic. There is a couple of spots that are being repaved so it's a little rough as well as a stoplight controlled section being repaired (down to one lane). Overall still a awesome ride. I'm biased as I live in Cambria and ride Hwy 1 quite often.

I did this route in January 2011 and it was indeed great. Some road construction along the route, but not a problem. Nice winding road with great views, passing nice villages. I can especially recommend restaurant Nepenthe for lunch, about 30 miles under Carmel on the route.

Hands down the best ride I've ever been on, I started in monterey and ended up in pismo ca. I've done this ride 3 times since 2007 I'm from fresno ca and it's a must do ride every couple years. This year I plan on a week of camping from frisco to Santa Barbara along highway 1 partying and relaxing along the way. The views are breathe taking the people I've met are cool and I love my state I'm so glad to have this place in my backyard

Took this route as the "destination ride" of a 4 day weekend from Las Vegas and were not disapointed! We started in San Luis Obispo (SLO, a fitting moniker for a delightful "small" CA town) and rode nawth to Monterey, enjoying many stops along the way. Fuel up in SLO/Monterey as the fuel costs "soar" right along with the views on the PCH. Losts of traffic on the route but no one make us feel rushed ... I think we ALL were enjoying the road! Final thought, don't roll into Monterey at 5pm on a Friday ... the final miles were "a parking lot" (and Goldwings don't take to splitting very well when loaded!) ...gawd, how I hate rush hour traffic!

A MUST-RIDE!! I did the PCH in August 2003 on my 1994 Yamaha Virago. Left San Diego on a Tuesday; destination Monterey. The most awesome views and weather I have ever ridden in in 20 years of riding!! Without a doubt, something you have to do before you die!!

The route 1 and 101 is a great ride. picked it up in Aberdeen Wash and went to Sdiego. Mostly 101 but some side trips onto route 1. It topped off a great ride from Texas to Carlsbad Caverns to Grand Canyon to Zion National park (another great ride area), then wiggled our way to Seattle. After 101, we spent a few days in Sdiego with my son and Grand kids then back across to San Antonio. The 101 was the best.

There's just something special about motorcycling across the Golden Gate Bridge, so that's how I started my southbound tour on Highway 1. My advice is that once across the bridge get off of the marked Hwy 1 and over to the coast by taking Geary. This is a lovely part of San Francisco's seafront and much better than staying on 19th Street. You'll see the famed Cliff House and the remains of Sutro's baths as you join the coast.
Once through the tunnel just south of Pacifica, use the viewpoint parking and enjoy the first views of how rugged the Pacific Coast can be. The tunnel was bored to eliminate traveling under the frequent rock fall of the notorious and sometimes deadly Devil's Slide. (I was almost killed in a rockslide here while attempting a 50 mile "Kennedy Walk" in the early 1060's)
On my tour I had my wife on the back of my CTX700 and we timed our ride to be at Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing for an early dinner. This is one of those always crowded eateries that serves simple meals that are reasonably priced, yet astoundingly good. After dinner we spent our first night in Monterey where Cannery Row, the Monterey Aquarium and hanging out on the coast watching the otters swim by are our favorites.
This was a sight-seeing trip and the next day was a short hop to Morro Bay. This is the very best of the central coast. Twisty, well paved asphalt, wide open views of crashing waves and the misty, salty spray that they leave behind lay in front of you for mile after gorgeous mile. Big Sur, the Bixby Bridge and every turnout offer something new. A tour of Hearst Castle near San Simeon is a must do, and we enjoyed ours immensely. You'll park your moto and take the 15 minute shuttle up the mountain to the castle while enjoying a variety of animals that occupy the property. I didn't expect to like this as much as I did and enjoyed the surprise.
Once in Morro Bay we enjoyed the lively waterfront bars and restaurants and the casual, relaxed feeling of this coastal jewel. Morro Rock, a volcanic plug sticks out of the sea and offers photographers the opportunity to shoot fabulous sunset photos. (best taken 30-45 minutes after sunset) I like to stay at the Inn at Morro Bay which is just inside Morro Bay State Park. The harbor views and the view of Morro Rock are perfect from the Inn's property.
The next time I do this tour, I'll spend two nights in Santa Barbara. I think it is the most beautiful and upscale small town on the central coast. There are plenty of eateries, bars, a nice wharf and a boat shuttle that goes between the harbor and wharf for wide open views of town.
Our tour took us down to Ventura and out to the desert through Mojave and then up Highway 395 through Lone Pine, Mammoth Lakes and then up and over Monitor Pass, Luther Pass and Echo Summit back to where we began our tour at our home near Sacramento. Just under 1,200 miles of pure moto-bliss!!

Loved it. The only sad part was having to turn around just south of Big Sur due to the wildfires burning at the time. Still enjoyed ride very much and can't wait to complete the ride.

A truly magnificent ride. I rode northbound from San Luis Obispo all the way to the highway's end in Leggett over the course of two days. I made the trip in August and the first day, through Big Sur, etc. was pretty good weather......overcast but 65 degrees and clear. The 2nd day was an entirely different story however. I left Bodega Bay in the morning and sat in fog the entire rest of the way up the coast. I could literally see sunshine 1/4 of a mile inland but had none on the highway. As a result, my views of the Pacific were sadly nearly non-existent and I was quite chilly due to the lack of sunshine and damp conditions. I had this happen to me once riding the Oregon coast as well and also in August. Makes me wonder if hot weather inland (it was near 100 when I got on 101 north of Leggett) sucks the cool ocean air in causing the aforementioned fog.

As has been mentioned, the traffic on the entirety of Highway 1 can be tough as well. The road north of San Francisco where I ran into the fog is cut out of the side of cliffs above the ocean and the views without fog are unmatched (I've done it on a clear day in a 4 wheeler). My advice, heated gloves no matter the time of year.

I took this beautiful ride from Morro Bay to Monterey because despite having been in California for over 2 years I had never travelled the PCH.

This route has it all, amazing ocean views, twisty mountain roads, boatloads of annoying traffic.

As beautiful as this road is, if you're hoping to get any sort of lean out of your bike, think again, there is so much traffic on this road that you might as well hang back and enjoy the view rather than trying to have fun in the twisties. I guess it depends on what you're trying to get out of the ride.

I've ridden all over this area. Absolutely beautiful country. Fishhopper's is my fav. Monterey Pier restaurant. A little pricey, but if you're a foodie like me, it should not be missed. PCH is often closed or has heavy traffic on the weekends. The road condition tends to be less than perfect. Lots of road repairs in this area. Still, looking over your shoulder at the Pacific Ocean is pretty damn awesome.

A must ride “bucket list” ride for anyone on two wheels and especially 2-up. Having spent the majority of my time in the West the PCH from Ventura to Canada does not disappoint. We have literally risen it dozens of times making it part of many, many trips. The majesty of the Pacific Ocean, coastal communities and opportunities for food and photos never end. Recommend riding in Late September or early October to avoid tourism and congestion from buses and motor homes. Also recommend riding midweek. Otherwise sit back and enjoy...you’ll ne planning your return trip.

I've done this ride more times than I can count, I go up to stay in Cambria a charming little town just south of San Simeon and will ride up to Monterey on CA 1 then back down south to Cambria in a day. It is honestly one of my favorite rides, causing me to make the 5 hour trek from my home in Orange County at least 5 or 6 times a year.

Usually crowded and so if you want to go fast and lean, avoid it. But it is spectacular. ride it from north to south so that you can be on the ocean side of the highway the whole length. place about four Go Pro's in various places, front fender, helmet, chest, rear facing backwards, etc. Views are spectacular. Stop and take pics. Can't say it enough. Bucket list ride, for the scenery and the views. I spent 14,000 miles riding out and back to do it and it was worth it. And because weather is pretty tempurate there is really no bad time to ride it, so you CAN avoid the peak summer months and still have a nice ride. I did it in September, after Labor Day and Schools opened back up, fewer RV's etc.
