This is a beautiful ride, as described. Lots of great scenery. Reservoirs, parks, forests. Nice winding roads. Some rough spots on the road, but not enough to really detract from the ride. Watch your speed, though, lot of small town sheriffs patrolling the area.
One attraction not listed previously is the Chuang Yen Monastery. It is open to the public and definitely worth a stop. It's just east of Canopus Beach on the way to Carmel. Look for the small white Buddha statue at the driveway. Then go onto the grounds to see the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere. On the weekends you can also get brunch there.
