A shorter loop option on this ride would be to turn on Flynn Creek Road at Comptche and head South to Hwy 128. At the junction turn left on 128 and head East to the Philo Greenwood Road where you would take a right turn and head West to Elk. At Elk turn North on Hwy 1 and proceed back to Mendocino. This route would be around 70 miles total and still include a lot of the scenery of the original route.

The road from Highway 1 to Comptche is in great shape as it was chip sealed last year and very little traffic. From Comptche to Ukiah its a mixture of great pavement and so so, but still allot of fun and even less traffic. Like Duke said you can cut right at Flynn Creek and hit back down to 128. As if Aug 6 21 there was road improvements happening so we will see. After the road turns into Orr Springs, Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve is an amazing redwood grove if you can take a break and hit an awesome park with very few visitors.
