As a local to the region, I can tell you that this route can be the most frustrating ride you'll ever take. The road itself is beyond inspiring, but the traffic will absolutely shatter your hopes and dreams. Plan on doing 20mph or less in most areas, on some of the most peg drag worthy asphalt you've ever seen.

Drive this many times in a car, but enjoyed this route on my FJR with my dad on his GoldWing after riding on the Tail of the Dragon. Fun trip, but generally lots of traffic and often slow going. GSMNP is the most visited NP in the US, so prepare for traffic. Cherokee, NC is a great place to visit if you have time.

Loved it, nice fall day, awesome ride. Not too much traffic. Shady side of mountain got chilly, but sunny side was nice. Leaves were beautiful - Mid Oct.
