I, too, turn around before the gravel begins. Don't be in a hurry once you turn off Hwy 12, because there's no safe parts for aggressive riding. Watch for sand in the low areas where water can cross the road. Rest assured, the distance is worth the effort. Once you get to the canyon, you will be thrilled. Take a walk back to the little chamber where you can look up through the tall, red cliffs. This is a MUST SEE if you're in the area!
