This is a beautiful ride, as described. Lots of great scenery. Reservoirs, parks, forests. Nice winding roads. Some rough spots on the road, but not enough to really detract from the ride. Watch your speed, though, lot of small town sheriffs patrolling the area.
One attraction not listed previously is the Chuang Yen Monastery. It is open to the public and definitely worth a stop. It's just east of Canopus Beach on the way to Carmel. Look for the small white Buddha statue at the driveway. Then go onto the grounds to see the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere. On the weekends you can also get brunch there.

One of my favorite roads in the area. I ride this regularly with all of my bikes. Great twisty roads, no stop signs or traffic lights till you are on the western end. Only downside is the road conditions aren’t always great. Very common for there to be tar snakes or partial lane re-paving leaving a lip right in the middle off the lane limiting using the full lane thru turns. If you get a chance to ride it after a fresh paving, it is a great road, with scenic views of lakes, great curves and hills. Lots of options for off-shoot routes from it that are also good.
