This is currently my favorite route as I've ridden it about 3 times in the past 3 months. I modified the return route to the Triad by getting off in Mount Airy with a food break stop at the Derby Restaurant, then south on 89 into the twisties past Hanging Rock -> Walnut Cove then home.
The Mabry Restaurant sounds interesting; will check that out in a future trip.

I used to live out there, what is described is a beautiful drive but the map is incorrect. The map shows getting off onto NC704 and going up to NC8 and crossing into VA to hook up with US 58.

My partner and I rode this route W-S to Blue Ridge Pkwy to Greensboro on 28 April 2012. Beautiful ride from Mt Airy, NC to Fancy Gap, VA to Madison, NC. The Blue Ridge Pkwy was AWESOME even though it was a little cold. The weather man lied to us about what the weather was going to be. The 40 miles of 4 lane to get to Mt Airy plus the 20 miles of 4 lane-city traffic after Madison and the 30 miles of I-40 back to the hotel in W-S were boring with not much to look at but the needed evil for the 80 miles of fun ride with great visuals. We took our time with frequent stops which made the ride a day long event. Worth doing and I hope to go back in the fall when the leaves start changing colors.

Any other time this ride would be a 4 to 5, as of June 13, 2020, the entire length of the parkway on this route from Mabry Mill to 52 is nothing but loose gravel, want to save yourself a headache skip for now.

My sister and I did this ride this past weekend and we loved it. The parkway was peaceful, not too much traffic and the weather was beautiful. Plenty of curves coming down to make for a fun and relaxing ride

Good day trip. Can get a bit traffic busy at times. But most of the ride is open and relaxing.

Great day ride. A little bit of everything as far as roads go. But well paved with great views.

2nd time on the route. Takes a bit of time to get into the good stuff away from Greensboro (where my hotel was). But worth the wait. Roads were clean and uncrowded yesterday and aside from the heat, a great day for riding. I imported the route into the Scenic app and it will need some cleanup - tends to put me in loops and odd routes. Will go back again.

Pleasant one- went in a pack a time or two. Good stops and plenty to see. Love it.
