I started in Spingfield and headed east on 126. I took 242 to Redmond. This was my first ride after purchasing my Shadow Spirit. The ride was fun even though care needed to be taken on the sharp curves. Many had gravel from vehicles that drifted off the pavement. I especially enjoyed the lava park with its senic sturctures and views.

Short, but too much fun! Truly a unique route through the lava fields and fantastic views at the top. The westside definitely has more twists and turns. Be sure to save time to walk the streets of Sisters.

Another awesome road defeated by the mighty Goldwing. Had a great drive. Coming from the west about ten miles in it started raining. The higher we got the harder it rained. By the time we got to the summit it was raining too hard to stop or even take a picture. Fogged right in. Still snow on the ground along side the road. Still had an awesome ride and would recommend it to everyone. Passed lots of bikes coming from the east.

Cars tend to let you pass quickly. The lookout point at the summit is nice and you can see far when the weather permits (typical). There are volcanic rocks to tall tree forests. You'll curve thru the rocks as well as thru trees. Watch for occasional gravel that was kicked up on tight turns, but for the most part, this road is in great condition. There are people camping and hiking on the west side, but the signs are clear and give ample warning. Two up can be tricky on a couple of tight switchback turns, but don't sweat it. I rate this as easy to slightly intermediate when two up. We went thru in early June and glad that the road was open. It can be closed for snow thru mid June.

Did this ride in August 2013. Rode East to West. Very little traffic, road condition was good with no debris, scenery was spectacular. Like a couple others have said, make time to stop and explore the view at the lava fields.

One of the best roads I have ridden, good clean pavement no traffic. I would rate this above the Dragon.

Loved this road, surprised it is not ranked higher. The elevation limits the time of year the road is open. The narrow twisties up through the trees are great fun, though it’s not something you want to break speed records on. Riding through the lava fields was like being on another planet.

I came from the westside out of Eugene. There is a lava observatory at the top high elevation and a great stop about halfway to Bend. The west side is very technical, 15 to 25 mph blind curves, great road surface but occasional gravel. Little traffic and they let you pass. The east side is higher speeds into Bend, many places to eat drink once you get down elevation towards Bend

Another on must ride list it unique and scenic. The volcanic stone observatory and the views from it are alone worth the trip. No tourist facilities but not far from Bend which is a good base for some great riding in the area.
