This was a great ride for slow, technical skill. Definitely look out for many bicyclists, pot holes and sand on the other side, going toward Livermore

I start at the Livermore side going south on Mines road but the route is basically the same. The only difference is that once I get into San Jose on 130 I go north on Piedmont blvd. to Calaveras road which returns me to Highway 84 without hitting any freeway. It is about 5 miles further and the twisties are great the whole way.
Look on the map for the Clalveras Resavoir to see what the road profile looks like.
All in all it makes for a terrific day on two wheels.

The Mount Hamilton side is beautiful anytime of year and you get a great view of the bay area. The road is clean and generally smooth, though there are a few pot holes along the double yellow light especially near the top. As long as you stay on your side of the road they are no trouble. The turns are often blind, with lots of tight right hand switchbacks. Lots of cyclists to watch out for.

The San Antonio / Mines side, wow! I just rode that side for the first time today, it's very very good. Can't wait to do it again. Older surface but holding up really well, sweeping smooth radius turns. An absolute joy to ride. There are about 6 cattle guard crossings, the first is near the exit of a turn the rest are on straights.

There is a lot of new smooth pavement on HWY 130. Mines road is a beautiful ride. The observatory parking lot up top is closed during this Covid-19 business so plan accordingly.

Mt Hamilton switchbacks will wear you out if you're not in shape. If you can dodge the bicyclists, it doesn't disappoint!

I’ve ridden this many times but have stayed away the last 5 or so years due to cars biting more than they can chew or hogging far more road than they should. It’s a great road with great scenery and might best be ridden during the week. The observatory if open is cool to check out, lots of history in there.

Great ride on a warm Saturday mid-October day. I went in a counter-clockwise direction. It's a fun ride that will keep you busy with a lot of tight and flat turns. There are many places with no guard rails and no signage of turns. The road was recently paved and was smooth as could be except for some rocks the size of apples scattered about. A guy on a sport bike spilled in front of me (he was okay). I also bottomed out my floorboard once, so definitely watch your speed.

Heavily dependent on the time of year. Winter is best for scenery as everything is green. Be careful on shady corners as frost can linger and surprise you. Otherwise, it's a great OTG ride!

Great twisty mountain route. No gas along the way and only a single intersection so make sure you head in prepared and with a full tank. Narrows to a single lane in many parts, and you may encounter trucks, other cars and cyclists along the way. Some very tight twists and gorgeous views.

Great ride and beautiful scenery at the top! Roads are narrow and twisty which will test your slow technical riding skills. The descent on the way back is also beautiful with sunset on the other side.

These roads can get a little sketchy. I always call to let people I'm going to ride on Mines Road, and call them when I get back. Beautiful area and scenic views.

Great scenic ride with a lot of curves. Watch for rocks on the road, cyclists and wildlife (deer, squirrels, etc) especially as you're getting closer to the observatory. Expect road to/from the observatory to be busier during its operating hours (12pm-5pm). Highly recommended ride.
