In my opinion this ride should be on every motorcyclists bucket list! What a phenominal experience! I rode from TX to NY and took the opportunity to ride The Three Sisters, Natchez Trace Parkway, Cherahola Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, Blue Ridge Parkway and to my delight finished up with Skyline Drive! The variation- curves, hills, straight aways is enought to keep the ride very interesting. On the Blue Ridge and Natchez after a while it felt like the movie Ground Hog Day or 50 First Dates! LOL! But on Skyline Drive there seemed to always be something new around the corner, including a juvenile Black Bear that hung out road side and seemed to pose for pictures. Got a little nervous taking pictures of the little guys because kept wondering if Moma Bear would suddenly make an appearance which would have not been good sitting on a motorcycle. Lot's of places to stop and take pictures at key elevations and Skyline Hotels right on the drive. I made the ride in late July and higher elevations above 4,000ft was quite chilly so bring a jack or fannel shirt even during the summer time when you make this ride! This is a relaxing, varied and truely beautiful scenic ride that I highly reommend to all riders!

We left York Pa, heading for the BRP, and figured it would be a great warm-up. Beautiful scenery, great roads, just amazing. I wanted to stop at every lookout to take in the views. We rode from Ontario not sure what to expect....now we can't wait to do it again. An absolute must.

Beautiful ride. I'm working in DC for 6 months, and I've been here 3 times already. The turns are awesome, the road is well-kept, and the road is angled just perfect throughout the turns.
There are deer and other wildlife throughout the park so watch it.
Also be sure to fill up before you enter the park.

Wonderful ride! Rode the 105 miles from Front Royal to Waynesboro. Scenery is breathtaking, with plenty of places to stop and rest and admire the beauty. Saw one bear that crossed the road about 50 feet in front of us, and numerous deer. Excellent pavement and sufficient amenities along the way. Speed limit is 35 mph, which is just about right. Plan on taking at least 4 hours to make the ride. A must-do ride!!

The Best Road I've ever ridden. Went in July . The weather was great and the road condition was even better, no pot holes, no gravel, no leaves. $10.00 toll per bike but was well worth it. I think I want to live somewhere along the Drive. LOVED IT!!! The hundred miles flew by.

Great ride, I went as per instructed, but turned around after the tunnel, which is shorty after RT 211 (about halfway) - the scenery was great, and the ride when I doubled back was even better as all the traffic seems to come from the north gate southbound. I took Rt 55 which was also fun and dined at Apples Homemade BBQ - vgood!

Wow. This was just amazing, by far best ride I've ever gone on! Roads are spectacular, lots of places to stop at, Premium gas available half way through the park, caught 3 rainstorms from the south end to the north end of the park and it was still an amazing ride! This is a must for anyone around this area!

I road down from NJ to see my friend in virginia. He took me here around 9 in the morning and killed 2 hours tearing up this route. Speed limit is posted 35.....didn't really follow it. we tore this road up. I was coming down the skyview part and my heart sank as the view was unbelievable. the roads were smooothhh. theres only like 3 park police but they will ride your ass. luckly only saw 1 coming back. I'll be back next year for some more action!! wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone

With the artificially low 35 mph speed limit just inviting a Federal speeding ticket, entrance fee of $20 per motorcycle and nothing special about this road over the Blue Ridge Parkway which is free and a much more reasonable 45 mph speed limit there really is no reason to ride this route vs the BRP

Great road! Took your advice and went for the ride and it was every bit as enjoyable as was described, although I found the most fun part of the ride this road called 211 which comes right down the side of the mountain and for a sport bike is definitely alot of fun!

As far as scenic motorcycle routes go, the skyline drive is by far the best (and most abundant at it) road I have been on in my travels so far. Which includes the entire eastern third of the US with nearly 100,000 miles on 2 wheels. The skyline drive and entire blue ridge parkway is perfectly spaced with viewing areas and boasts endless stretches of scenic views. It's you, the road, and open-air nature. Amenities are kind of scarce but that's what I hope for on a good day's ride, but be aware of your gas and plan ahead.

Go easy on the loud pipes here, as you're driving directly through an otherwise very quiet camping area and National Park. :-)
That said, Mountain Meadows is an awesome stop, and the amenities here are unbelievably good for being on a mountain ridgeline that's several miles to the nearest town at any point.

I rode this in summer, 2012. It was part of a ride up the whole Blue Ridge Parkway, too. I was disappointed in that the scenery didn't seem to be as spectacular as further south, but still a wonderful ride. What makes it so nice is the roadway surface and curves, the lack of traffic most of the way, and that you can really take your time to look at the scenery. This route is not made for one in a hurry.

I have ridden this route several times mostly starting in Cherokee NC though. For a relaxing and scenic ride its the best I've been on. Riding the entire Blue Ridge Pkwy is something I haven't been able to do yet but I plan to in the future in the future.

rode here from ohio on rt 50; trip over was good , mostly twisting up and down hilly terrain, mostly good roads; the skyway was even better, beautiful scenery and great rods, very little traffic (went 6-12 to 6-22 of 2009); nice roadside views and a few areas on the skyway to fuel up or get food; pretty remote otherwise; traveled then to the blueridge parkway and road it until storms and low clouds made riding impossible to continue....will definitley go back!

I have ridden this stretch of roadway four times between 1990 and 2006 on bikes (twice on a 1989 HD Ultra, once on a 2003 BMW R1150RT & once on a BMW F-650GS). The RT ride was the most fun by far because of the handling characteristics of the bike.

Be sure to take your camera and enjoy the look outs and signage shots. Most impressive during the fall.

Check before going to see if road surfaces have been milled/ground rough for miles or not like in 2008. This rough surface with the small grit it leaves on the road makes 2 wheel cycles slip and slide. I wish that when they do this for miles it gets posted on website "road conditions".

I rode the entire Skyline as part of a trip from NY to FL on my KLR 650 ADV bike. Shenandoah is a lovely park, and Skyline is a mello ride with lots of curves. Occasionally you'll get stuck behind a slow moving car & marked passing zones are few and far between, but the slow ones usually pull off at the next overlook anyway. The views are really nice though so you might want to pull over as well - just leave before the slow guy :)

A bucket list ride on the East Coast! I did it solo which was very enjoyable. Plenty of Civil War and CCC stops nearby. The speed is easy and the views are unforgettable.

Great ride that I often make since I live in Northern VA. What's even better is to NOT hit the bears that you will see just off of the road.

The Skyline is like driving through a golf course with wildlife. Best in the autumn until end of October. Speed limits are rabidly enforced. It's a national park, so you can ride it for free with a National Park Senior Lifetime Pass. There are no gas stations on the route so fill up and google local gas station locations.

Wonderful, beautiful, wooded drive. The speed limit is serious, I saw officers checking speed every few tens of miles. The rain can sweep in and back out pretty fast, but the pavement is very well maintained and hazards are well marked.

Great ride leading to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Last rode Skyline Drive in April 2019. A buddy and I were in no hurry, so we did the posted speed limit the whole way. That made for a very nice ride. Beautiful road, wonderful vistas. Watch for deer, especially in the early evening.

The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because of the 35 mph limit. Except for that it's a nice road with outstanding views that overlook the Shenandoah Valley and Virginia farmlands. Stay alert for animals. I have seen deer, turkeys and black bears numerous times.

Could be a five, but because it is usually crowded, and patrolled and the speed limit is 35 i gave it a 4. It would be more fun to ride if it wasn't for the above. But it is still a pretty ride and drive. It is in the NPS and so there is an entrance fee at either end ($25.00? i think), unless you have one of the passes. LEO's are NPS and fines are federal, and cost a lot. This is usually considered the northern extension of the Blue Ridge Parkway. the two combine for almost 600 miles of no light, or stop signs, from Cherokee, NC to Front Royal VA (almost Wash DC). Plenty to do along this route which is through the Shenandoah National Park. Definitely worth a ride, at least once.
