Great road to ride. I liked SR78 east of McConnelville also. If you take it to IS77 the road is great to ride and you can stop and see the Big Muskie bucket along the way. Before you leave McConnelsville you MUST stop and Boondocks! GREAT FOOD!
Update from Ohio’s Road Ranger (July 30th, 2020): This route surface is in good shape as of June 2020.

I don't understand the title "Ohio's Dragon's Tail." If it is a reference to the Tail of the Dragon in TN/NC then this is a misnomer. This is a nice ride with elevation changes, twists and turns but nothing close to the southern "Tail." We caught this last summer after riding the triple nickle down from Zanesville. We headed West to Glouster and then backtracked to McConnelsville. I wish we got back on 555 South instead because I was a bit disappointed in 78 after reading the reviews here. If you want to ride a route that is more "Tail of the Dragon" in Ohio, take 536 and bring a clean change of underwear.

This route was great. A must to do. Roads are clear, turns signs well placed that prepares you what to expect at every turn, and plenty of good view

I've rode this 3 times now it's a pleasure the surface is good with lots of well banked sweeping curves that allow you to throttle right threw them no need to stop at McConnelsville go at least to 77

A good stretch of road. The road can be a little rough in areas. I will be back to ride it again.

Link for Rt. 78. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_State_Route_78
State Route 78 (SR 78) is a state highway that runs for 105 miles (169 km) from Nelsonville to Clarington in the U.S. state of Ohio. Car and Driver has called it one of the most scenic highways nationwide.[2] The stretch of this highway that runs along the south side of Burr Oak State Park in Morgan County, Ohio, is well known for its extreme curves and views, and is sometimes locally referred to as the "Rim of the World." Much of this highway runs through old coal-producing areas

I drive the stretch from McConnellsville to I77 yesterday on the way home from a business trip in a car . I promise myself to go back on my Ural with wifey in the sidecar. Just about the best stretch of road I've seen in Ohio as far as twisties and up and downs. I78, I'll see you again in the springtime.

Boy, they do love to through around the 'Tail of the Dragon' comment on every damned twisty road in Ohio, don't they? This is not even remotely close to Tail of the Dragon. What it is...is a damned fun road in it's own right.

I rode this today (8/17)...great road. The conditions are excellent. Watch the center lines, they're slick when hot. Gravel in the corners at intersections. Someone said this is just for riding and it was.
I-77 - If you go north here, stop by "The Wilds", but prepare for a long day if you do the safari days.
East of I-77 - She'll take you all of the way to the river in SE Ohio. Definitely one for your "bike-it" list.....

This was a cool road. A couple really fun twisty, slanted curves. Only issue was way too much loose gravel on curves from farm equipment and driveways. some of the views from the top were amazing.. well worth the ride!!!! I enjoyed it a lot, but the hocking hills is still my choice of roads to ride so far :) be safe and much peace!

The road and scenery is dumpy in McConnelsville but it quickly gets challenging as you head east. Tons of twisties, 6/10 for surface, 9/10 for scenery. There is one spot with a million dollar view (and a dump of a house sitting on it). I'd recommend this one. It was fun.

Have ridden this stretch of OH-78 several times with the last being on 8/10/19. Currently there is road construction on the bridge over Muskingum River that connects McConnelsville and Malta, down to one lane, read construction should be completed end of October, first of November 2019. If your expecting anything like The Dragon/US-129/Deals Gap, your going to be disappointed, it's nothing like that. However... it's still a great ride! Twisties, banked sweeper, nice scenery. Road surface is in pretty good shape. Boondocks BBQ & Grill about a mile north of McConnelsville on OH-60 is a GREAT place to eat! 78 east of McConnelsville to Cladwell is a nice ride too, takes you right by Big Muskie.

Rode this today (Thursday) traffic was light with a couple of trucks. Nice sweeping curves with pavement in decent shape. Took time to look at the scenery which takes you back in time. Had signs for Amish horse and buggies. Came upon one. Have done the Tail several times and this isn't as intense but still a good ride.

03/26/2016, clear spring day. This track is awesome, and the best that Ohio has to offer. Road conditions are supreme, only a few years old. North of McConnelsville is just as good. Stop at a Minors' Memorial Park on top of a ridge to see the Big Muskie Bucket.

As has been stated by numerous people, I'm not really sure what the correlation to this road and the TN/NC Tail of the Dragon is. If anything OH 536 is EASILY twistier than this, but that road can be a real pain in the ass. This is more of a main road and is usually in a better state of repair.
Certainly worth the effort if you're on 555, since they cross over. Have fun, but don't expect the moon. It's not THAT good.

Really like this road for riding in solitude. Very little traffic on it and when you travel the east end it's where Ohio Power did a great amount of strip mining. On the north side of the road in that area it has a road side rest stop where the Big Muskie drag line bucket is on display. Nice place for break. Watch out for deer!

Rode in July 2019, one of our group broke down on 555 and we had to head to Athens on 78, nice long sweepers, and pushing my 650 to keep up to the Victory and FJR bike in the group.

I drove this road on March, 27,2021. Road conditions are pretty decent but watch for some gravel on driveways. Stopped at the Big Muskie just outside of McConnelsville.

Unfortunately it started to rain shortly after starting this route and continue most of the way through. My wife and I did enjoy what we could with the rain and will definitely be back to ride this route again with better weather. My wife has a Scout and we made a mental note to fill up in Zanesville before beginning this route next time because there is long distances without a gas station in sight.

Great ride, rode out to McConellsville from Hebron and down the dragon tail to Glouster. Picked up SR13 down to Athens where we jumped on SR 56 and finished out the ride on the SR 56 MCroad to Springfield.
