Made it a point to ride both Hwy 14 sections on my last cross country trip. It was worth every second. I try to explain to people back in the midwest what they are missing when they insist on stopping at Sturgis. They just don't get it. This rode is in my top 5 of all time rides (U.S.) I think I scared the old people on Hogs because I was having a spirited ride up and down the pass and loving every second of it. Happened to be a beautiful day as well. Sheridan was cold and gray, but 15 minutes later I was on the sunny roof of the Rockies. I will be back!

If you're looking for a ride to add to your list of perfect 10 rides this is it. Rode it in July, 2009 and all I can say is WOW! I had rode the Beartooth Highway in previous years but the ride south to Cody and through the Bighorns was a first. The variety and quality of the scenery was stunning and the road was a blast to maneuver. I have a couple of tips for future riders. One, when you see the "Cattle at Large" signs on Highway 296 pay attention as I met some of the "critters" up close and personal on a curve - luckily I was paying attention. Second, be prepared for a variety of weather - very hot in the lower elevations to very cold at higher elevations.

Sorry, I forgot to mention Beartooth Hwy. We left The Big Horn mountains to Red Lodge, We stayed in a beautiful Hotel call the Pollard, then on to Beartooth. The road is also under construction towards the top, but the road up is not. Again be prepared for stops/delays. This road is busier then Big Horn as well so keep an eye on the traffic as well as the scenery. If you head on to Cooke City to Yellowstone, there is construction in Cooke City. Montana likes to take the whole road down to the dirt and gravel. Be prepared for delays in Cooke City. They kept the dust down but watering the dirt/road, so your bike will get dusty or dirty. The scenery over Beartooth and the ride through Yellowstone from the NE entrance will numb the pain of a dirty bike! 8^)

Both the Big Horns and Chief Jo are spectacular rides! We've never strung them together as we typically spend a night in Cody when riding through N & NW Wyoming. Chief Jo is one of our favorites of all time due to its spectacular scenery. We like to ride it first thing in the morning when we're fresh and so is the day. We then continue on 212 through northern Yellowstone, and on into MT via 89. We always stop at Painters Outpost for a hearty breakfast (about 25 miles west of Chief Jo's hairpins but before you hit the Beartooth turnoff.) The Big Horns we have done (and loved) several times as well. We call it the "Top of the World" because once you've summited you get 30 miles or so of unbridled mountaintop riding before descending through a long series of steep hairpins. Several times we've had to outrun T-storms up there, but that's typical Wyoming.

This is a spectacular ride. I did the part from Cody through Chief J and Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge MT over the recent July 4th weekend. We then doubled back over Chief J to Cooke City MT and through Yellowstone from the NE entrance to Jackson WY. I live in Denver and ride the Colorado rockies regularly so the bar is set pretty high for mountain roads and passes. This was about as good as it gets. Beartooth is like a combination of Mt. Evans and Independence Pass.

I have made this ride several times in my life and most recently July, 2009. You need to experience this ride at least once in your life if you ride a motorcycle and I am sure you will find it the best ride of your life. Ride safe and God Bless!!

Chalie was right !! The late Charles Kuralt that is. He once stated that the Beartooth Hwy is the most beautiful hi-way in America. I suggest you wait for clear sky's if this is your first time. Make an impression that will last a life time.

Road the Chief Joseph north from Cody, up to the Beartooth Pass and into Red Lodge last June 21....outstanding ride! Lots of snow still on the Beartooth, and it got a little chilly, but a wonderful ride. Beats the heck out of Yellowstone; as my friend put it, they put Yellowstone too far west!

My partner and I toured the US in 2009 on a HD Ultra Classic, the road from Red Lodge to Cody was amazing, stunning views stunning roads and above all a motorcycle dream to ride on. I have recommended this route to all my fellow Harley riders in South Africa who are making the trip to the Black hills rally in 2010.

Did this ride on way back from South Dakota in Aug. 2010. Day started in Sheridan and ended in Jackson Wyoming. It was long but great ride . Scenery was fantastic all the way. Few rough spots on the Bighorn in the switchbacks ( road work )...minor really. We took the road through Lovell and Red Lodge. The Beartooth Pass was awesome. Definitely a road I would ride again. FyI...If on a map it says "Closed in Winter " ...Ride it. I haven't been disappointed yet.

I have ridden this ride but not at the same time. We rode the Chief Joseph when we rode the Beartooth Pass. We have ridden between Cody and Greybull and we rode on a poker run out of Sheridan in which we rode 14 over the Big Horns. Every stretch is beautiful in it's own way although very different in sections. I live in and love Wyoming so this is one of our favorites! Do yourself a favor and take this ride one day!

One of the most beautiful rides in America. Actually, enjoyed it more than the more famous Beartooth Highway. Very easy mountainous ride on good roads when I was there. Highly recommend to all. Should easily be in top 5 of all American rides.

If you are coming from anywhere (like Cody, WY), you will start your ride looking at of some possible high mountains ahead. But when you've reached the higher elevations along this route, you will be amazed. The views are of the remnants of heated volcanic rock that has been pushed up and now has deep eroded valleys that are breathtaking beyond what you could have imagined. What more can I say. The pictures here and the descriptions can only invite you. This is a route that has to be absorbed by your presence to be enjoyed. This is Montana at its finest.

Have ridden a portion of this route, from Hiway 212 to Cody, WY, several times, the last time in July 2014. A good fun road with good scenery and some tight 180 degree turns. Watch out for tar snakes in the turns on Dead Indian Pass during the hot summer months. Otherwise this section of the total route is worth doing and a good route to or from Beartooth Pass.

I have done this a few times. This is, IMHO, second only to Beartooth. And the good part is, it end where Beartooth begins!. You can do them both, over and then back if you stay in Cody, WY,. This is a great road and ride. Elevation changes, terrain changes, topography changes, pull offs with views, and historical markers about the flight of Indians chased by the 7th Calvary (Stop and read these at the summit at the pass at top). Stop about one mile down from the pass for some great photo ops ove the view and looking over the valley to BearTooth Highway. Lightly traveled everytime I have been on it. Lightly patroled as well. In the fall, I have encountered cowboys on horses moving their cattle down from the higher elevations at the end of grazing season before snowfalls, so watch for them around a blind curve. I have seen mule deer, Elk, coyote and hawks while riding. Fantastic ride. Somewhat challenging and the down hill has some switchbacks which might have some rock fall debris. Put this on your bucket list

Rode Chief Joseph Highway from Yellowstone down to Cody through Wind River Valley. Sweeping turns on the Chief Joseph and great views from the top. Carry extra gas or fill up frequently, not much service till you get to Cody.

The ride over the Big Horn Mountains is spectacular! I just made the trip on August 3rd, 09 and 14a is under construction on the eastern side so be prepared for frequent stops/delays. It appears they are putting in a new road. Do not let this deter you from this taking this route it is beautiful. Take a jacket, I had to stop at 9500 ft and throw the leathers on!

Did the first half of this ride 20 years ago with my kids in a Chrysler mini van pulling a pop up camper. We kept overheating on the way up the mountain, then lost our brakes coming down the other side. Thank God for truck run away ramps, we spent the next 4 days in a motel in Lovell Wyoming. My wife and I did the second part of the ride on our vacation to Yellowstone. We were avoiding a 10 mile back up in Yellowstone due to construction of the Fishing Bridge. After lunch at a new micro brewery in Cody Wyoming, we happened on the Chief Joseph Scenic Hyw. What a fantastic ride. No traffic, awesome scenery which took us to the North East entrance to Yellowstone, where we saw the largest bison herd that Yellowstone has. What a great trip.

Great place to ride. However the state has been patching the road cracks with a rubbery substance we call tar snakes. very slimy feel to it even on the straights, but in
the corners it really adds to the pucker factor.
