Did this 15 years ago with the Miata Club and just got to do it again on Sportbike...
On Top of the World Views, Tight, Technical Roads, and usually above average road conditions. The Snowshoe Challenge is a feather that needs to be on any Sport Inspired Rider and/ or Driver's cap.

Not much has changed since the comments from '08. One thing to remember, alot of snow fall on this area during winter, therefore alot of cinders and salt are applied to this rode. So, yes, there are some gravely turns.
I also agree with taking this trip backwards from rt 28 to snowshoe. The road, as most, is much more fun going uphill then downhill!!!.
Stop by Cass Scenic Railroad for a blast to the past. They have a railroad museum and also give old coal engine train rides.
Be careful and enjoy your ride!!!!!

I consider this the back side of Snowshoe. It does get steep and it has hairpin curves. I prefer to go up to be in more control and less wear on my brakes, and go down on the Rt. 219 side. Beautiful view at the top. This Rt. 66 is well worth the trip...

The trip is great ,although a challenge I think is a bit of an overstatement.

I was through here in late Fall '08, and there were several turns loaded down with spilled sand from transport to all the construction sites in the area. I almost dumped my ride off a turn in a spot where I may have been discovered by a future archaeologist.
Be alert and ride it for the scenery. It's a beautiful route, but one loaded with hazards thanks to all the construction equipment and materials transport in the area.

Very twisty and fun road especially doing it one way turning around and then going back the other way. However, there does seem to be a fair bit of traffic on this road the times that I was on it. Also, there is very light lines of gravel around certain bends. Nothing that would probably wreck you, but certainly give you a start.
I don't know if that gravel is washout or from the edge of the road, but I would stick to this road on dry days and days after it hasn't rained. Other than that a thoroughly entertaining ride.

About all I recall... it was a cool ride on a hot day. Only stop we made was at Route 66 Restaurant for brunch, nice setting and the food was good, well to be honest it was good just to have a place you could dine in. Next time around, would like to stop at Cass to check things out. There is construction going on between Cass and 28, some blasting, down to one lane. As mentioned there is gravel.
