In my comments on the Grand Staircase Escalante ride I mentioned that it was a great idea to continue on to Mexican Hat and then here it is!! This ride is the whole enchilada and and having ridden everything from Blue Ridge Pkwy and the Dragon to Beartooth Pass and the Trinity Alps ( and the real Alps too) I can say with complete confidence that there are few rides that compare to this ride across southern Utah. You will not be dissappointed!! Plan on getting up early and doing a full day - there's just too many Koadachrome moments to get through any faster. Please note: This is another one of those rides that has to be done in both directions to fully appreciate. It's simply awesome. Unless you want to stay at Ruby's at Bryce, Id recommend going another 30 minutes to Panguitch - the hotels are much cheaper and there's a great little BBQ place on the west side of the main drag. Highly recommended! And in the morning, get up and ride it back the other way!

OMG, did this trip in early June 2014. Wow, one of my favorite rides. There is really too much to mention for this ride. We travelled West to East and it was fantastic. Some say the views may be better from the other direction. I say, either way is great. Stop at the overlooks at the East of the Grand Escalante-Staircase (hwy 12) south of Torrey. Make sure to plan PLENTY of stops just to see the sights. You can't see it all, so plan where you want to spend time. We split this ride into two days with a stop over in Torrey. The views just riding through are awe inspiring. Moki Dugway (just to say you did it), Bridges NM is a 1 hr jaunt. Stay in Torrey, and eat at the Capital Reef Inn and Cafe. Fantastic food, we saw a few riders there too. The amazing petroglyphs at Capital Reef NM were easy to see with no walking required. Road conditions are excellent. Bring lots of water. Better yet, use a hydration pack to drink while riding. Be prepared for cooler air on the passes and hot and dry in the valleys.

We rode this route west to east, on our Harleys, May 1, 2012. It was a perfect day with great roads and scenery culminating with a fantastic steak at the Mexican Hat Inn swinging grill. Too bad five stars is the limit because I'd rate it a 10 if possible.
As an alternative to the described route, we took Highway 276 South from 95 to Bullfrog, ferried across Lake Powell to Hall's Crossing and then 276 North to rejoin Hwy 95. Good road and nice scenery riding though Glen Canyon as well.
Can't wait to ride this again! Next time both ways.

We made the trip as a one-day in late July (East-West). Roads were very good even the hard packed gravel. The summer heat was oppressive but the scenery excellent. The mountain range between Torrey and Bryce Canyon was a welcome relief.

The ride up the Moki Dugway from Mexican Hat is great. 1,100 vertical feet in 3 miles of switchbacks. There is a great lookout at the top called Muley Point. The road is primitive so it's a little tricky for a bike in spots, but the view is a great reward.
State highway 95 through Glen Canyon is one of the most majestic in the world

Someone once told me after riding the Blue Ridge Skyway in NC that out west, some routes were 100 times better. This is one of those routes. Every time you think it couldn't get any better, it does. From Volcanic ash shorelines on lakes outside Bryce Canyon to the incredible structures in the Valley of the Gods, this ride is the ultimate.
Curvy mountain roads that were so much fun that I turned around and rode them again. Try the Burr Trail Grill for coffee and lunch just east of Escalante and stay at the San Juan trading post in Mexican Hat. And one last thing, travel south 15 miles more outside of Mexican Hat and see Monument Valley (Forest Gump stopped running there). When I die, you can scatter my ashes along this route!!

My brother and I rode this route in May 2009, he on his BMW 1100 RS, and I was riding my BMW LT. This was a awe inspiring journey through nature. We then rode into Colorado and continued this amazing tour. We plan on doing it again soon.

One of our more memorable rides. Climbing out of the Valley of the Gods on 261 was a great rides. This 3 mile stretch of rode is not paved and very narrow but this is what makes it cool to ride.

My Brother and I rode this from Blanding westward in summer of 2015. Two days of the best riding we've ever experienced. The landscapes are simply breath taking and the roads oh so much fun to ride. Hell's Backbone just outside of Boulder blew our socks off.

I took this ride west to east on day 3 and 4 of my 43 day solo 48 state ride. I rated this a 5 because of the wide variety of riding conditions and beautiful views. The Burr Trial Inn was indeed a great place for lunch (I loved the Risotto Cakes). Just before arriving there I missed the turnoff for Hell's Backbone, and was glad I did. The people that recommended it must have been on dual sports without the gear I had, because the waitress strongly recommended that I not circle back to ride it. After staying overnight in Torrey at the Capital Reef Inn (simple rooms, but a great restaurant), I finished the route through Hanksville to Mexican Hat The petroglyphs were a bit hard to see, and Moki Dugway had a fantastic view at the top lookout, but was a bit scary- I "engine braked" the whole way down, and was regularly adding additional braking and pulling over as cars came by at 3x my speed (this is a very narrow, steep, gravel road). If you ride this whole ride, there is way to bypass Moki Dugway, so be prepared.

One of my top rides ever. The staircase, Fry canyon, Capitol Reef, Monument Valley, Moki Dugway (which is the gravel road descent described in the write up of this route). I did this in August and while it was hot it wasn't intolerable. Check those weather reports.

The route from Mexican Hat up to Torrey UT runs up along the Capital Reef. Absolutely beautiful run. Not much in the way of gas, or food or lodging along through here for a 100 miles. So top off everything first. It is a hot run as it is mostly desert terrain on that first half. Stop in Torrey and top off again. The ride through the Escalante is amazing. Forested Aspen, Pines, Evergreens, High ridges with blowing cross winds. Lush valleys. Stop at the state park along this second half (about midway between Torrey and Bryce) and visit the museum about the ancient Indian mounds. Bryce canyon is amazing and you need to allow at least 4 hours to ride through it, if not a whole day just for it. (it is a dead end road so down and back out). All the road are great, good pavement and fun to ride. Nothing real dangerous except cross winds and gusts. Challenging enough to keep you interested and awake but nothing that even a newbie couldn't handle. Utah is an amazing state. Do this ride. you won't regret it.

I did this in reverse of the route mentioned. Cannot recommend this more highly.
As mentioned, you really need to take the time and go into Bryce canyon N.P. An amazing place.
I rode down Moki Dugaway on a 725 lb. Road King so if you're a reasonably experienced rider, don't be intimidated by it. Take your time and you'll be fine.

Rode this route in 2010 en route from Ohio to Billings, MT. We came up from Monument Valley through Mexican Hat in July. Actually wasn't too hot this trip. Taking 261 up through the Moki Dugway was a very surprising drive, going North up to the top of that mesa was something else. What a view from the top! We ten proceeded NorthWest to Hanksville, Middle of nowhere but the hotel was nice and the restaurant was okay. Can't recall their names. We then took 24 West to 12 and then South. What a drive these roads are, if you haven't been here you are missing some of the best views of a lifetime. Stayed at Bryce Canyon Lodge and how the stars shine here. It's a certified dark spot, won't see any light spoiling the night sky. We then drove 89, 143, and 14 and 89 South to 9 to Zion NP. The roads and views are fantastic and traffic was light until we got to Zion NP. This was just a small part of a 3 week road trip.

Incredible scenery that varies as you ride it. Fry Canyon has the most beautiful rock colors. Capital Reef is fun to stop at. Torrey has good places to eat. Then the ride over Hwy 12 can't be beat. I have done this ride many times and will do it again. Take the ride into Bryce Canyon while you are there. If you don't, you will be sorry later. This route is one of Utah's best.
