The stretch from Moab to La Sal Junction goes through very colorful sandstone canyons. A stop along the way at the "Hole-in-the-Rock" site has a good hour or so of fun with the animals on display and a home built into the solid rock.

Once you are headed east on Hwy. 46/90, you will be traveling through tall brush ranch country and have a great view of the La Sal Mountains to the north. Along this stretch, you will see the common, short, juniper and pinyon pine trees. The road down off that plateau to the valley below goes through some colorful, tight turns and interesting views.

Now in a valley, you'll pass a small town off to your left called Paradox. You will wonder why anyone would live there except for the peacefulness and beauty of the surrounding cliffs.

Next point will be a small store on the right at a location called Bedrock. The store is right out of a hundred old movie. When I was there once, a cowboy pulled up in his pickup and I could see he had a calf lying on his passenger seat!

There is no gas at any of these locations until you get to Naturita, another 25 miles, or so.

We started this ride from Dove Creek CO coming out of Cortez/Durango. Just west of Dove Creek head north on SR 141. The scenery was beautiful valleys and curvy section on the way to SR 90 where you pick this ride up on the way to Moab. This is the way to get to Arches from Durango if you have extra time and want to enjoy the ride off the interstate. The roads were medium quality with some small tar snakes and other areas with brand new asphalt. I guess there are in the middle of upgrading the hwy here and doing sections at a time. We ran into road construction on 141 south of 145. Naturita is really not that small and is a nice stop/start. From there to Moab, you'll see lots of bikes riding the road. Curves make it interesting and the views are wonderful.

My son and I rode this over the July 4th, 2010 weekend. Starting from Moab you take Hwy 46 thru some gently winding ranch land until you arrive in LaSal. Leaving Lasal you begin some nice mountain climbs, and winding road. Shortly you will encounter a 9% 3 mile descent to the river. You follow the river for a few miles and then begin climbing along the canyon sides in a series of sweeping 25 to 45 mph curves. there are several curves with no guardrails thru here so keep things within reason or find yourself several hundred feet below the roadway in the canyon. After about 10 miles you descend into a lush valley and the road becomes failry strait to Nucla.

This ride is breathtaking. THe valley from Paradox to Naturita has a long straight road, but the most amazing views to either side of jagged mountains. As you drop in from the west, the valley opens up in front of you and is stunning.
