Been on this road a couple of times while heading to Sturgis with the wife. It is desolate in spots but very much eye candy. Tried to download some pics but the site is down. This area especially pretty near south entrance to Badlands NP at Scenic. Overall, road in excellent condition, ammenities were sparse but adequate. We were last on this road summer of '08

Dont be afraid to spend the night in Interior, SD There is a motel:
www.budgethost.com/hotels/Badlands_Budget_Host_Interior_SD.aspx
or a Bed & Breakfast west of Interior a couple miles:https://www.circleviewranch.com/
If you're into quiet and enjoy being away from fast paces of city life, either on of these places will do!

Road surface not in the best of shape in spots but certainly doable. We came home this way, once you get past Rapid City Regional Airport hardly any traffic. Cowboy Corner at Interior has gas (old pumps) and rest rooms. Ate at Shirley’s Diner in Winner, good food with daily specials. It is on north side of road just east of Main St. Plenty of gas and in Winner, 44 under construction thru town. For us, a great alternate from the slab.
